It is now time that we get after it and removed our ancient (1467 hr) Chevy 350 from the boat (1980 Campion Hiada) and replace it with a new peppier 350. The big question is how long will this take two able bodied guys??

The plan is to remove the 280 leg and then remove the engine. We have a back hoe available to do the lifting.

I am thinking a day or two. But is there anyone out there that has any tip on what not to miss and how best to go about it??

Thank
Dale

Re: Time To Remove The AQ260 - How Long???

It's hard to say how long it will take. depends on the layout of the boat. I could have mine out in about 30 - 45 min.

You only have to remove the upper gear box on the outdrive. Your would then remover the six bolts holding the locking ring behind the upper gear box.

Then you disconnect all the parts in the bilge, fuel, exhaust hoses, electrical etc, hoist it out.

When you have the engine out you'll split the flywheel cover off the old motor. You need to check the flywheel cover bearings and shaft. If there is any play in the shaft you'll want to replace the bearings before reinstalling. best to do it now since you have to pull the engine to change the bearings.

Don't be in too much of a hurry. You only want to do this once.

Let us know how it goes. We like pics of new engines.:D

Thanks for the info -

To remove the upper gear housing I would guess that you remove the bellows, then the gear shift linkage. Then the two bolts under the housing and then the two allen retaining bolts, then lift off the upper gear house. And that is it???

Sounds pretty simple. Is it that easy?

Thanks

You really should head up to the "Adults Only" sticky and download the manual for your engine and outdrive.

Here's one thread on bellows replacement: http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=376547&highlight=volvo+bellows+replacement
There are quite a few others as well.

Now is also a good time to order all the o-rings, seals, gaskets, u-jonts, bellows, water suction fitting, zincs, pressure test kit, and other maintenance parts for the outdrive. The search function on the this forum works quite well. Don't hesitate to ask for help.
