Manual says use "OMC Gasket Sealing Compound" on flywheel nut and "OMC MolyLube" on the aluminum and inside the timer base. They dont have MolyLube at the boat store. What can I pick up at a regular automotive store that's an equivalent, of both products would be nice.... :)

And, IF my Evinrude starts with the new stator and timer base, roughly how bad will/can the timing be off? Will it hurt anything, if it runs, to use it this weekend? Manual says redo the high speed timing, planning on having the shop do that if..................

Re: Timer Base/Flywheel Installation

Luna.... There are times that even the manuals leave something to be desired. Use plain oil on the nylon retaining ring and the related groove on the timer base. Use anti corrosive grease (a slight bit) on the timer base brass bearing and the related top crankcase head surface.

Use nothing on the flywheel nut, but be sure to torque it to factory specs. If you do not torque that nut properly, the flywheel key will shear resulting in damage to the flywheel and crankshaft tapers.

You have not listed the year or hp of the engine so I cannot advise you of the proper torque.

I've done that job a few times and have never encountered a timing change. I wouldn't be concerned about that statement.

You can use permtex in small can that has brush on end of can cap, or GM gasket sealer on the nut.

85 120hp E'rude

Got the manual(s) and specs. Off my head, it's approx 150 ft. lbs.! Looked all over the place for a strap wrench or flywheel holder last weekend when I was removing the nut, with no luck. Making up a long bar at work right now, plan is to use a couple of 7/16 pins in those holes in the flywheel, and put a couple holes in the bar, sort of a home made spanner wrench.

OIL- Do you mean like automotive? Or 2 Stroke?

And Joe, I have another post running, few days old, regarding that VRO pump I got from you.......(tan wire???)

Re: Timer Base/Flywheel Installation

Just reread Joe's response, "oil on the ring", book says 2 stroke oil, got that covered. The "non corrosive" grease? Can I use the same "marine" grease that I put in my bearing buddies??

Thanks
