Re: Timid but determined Glasstream restoration

Hello all,
Sorry I didn't get back to you all sooner but I was out on the boat. :D
I had to spend time with my BH when I got home tonight but when She went to bet I went to work bedding in the stringers. :D
Sorry no pic's, but not much to see anyways unless you like looking a PL.
I did manage to run out of PL, I knew I should have picked up some more during the week.
Once I get the stringers completed and the PL sets up I will start glass them in. :D
That will take most of the weekend. I think.
I would like to get all your opinions on a problem area.
I don't have pic's of it yet but I will try to describe it for now.
I have a bulkhead that runs parallel to the stringers for about six feet down each side. It is an area for the gas tank in the center of the boat.
The Problem is that it is only a couple inches from the inboard stringers. I don't think I'll be able to get the glass down in the area good enough to seal it properly.
This is my thought. If I notch the top of the string and bulkhead and Span the distance with another piece of wood , then glass the whole thing. that would also give me plenty of room to make sure the access hatch for the gas tank is secure.
What Ya think?

That question is definitely going to take a pic, cause I have no Idea what you are talking about. Too bad about running out of PL.

It's after 10:00, and pouring raiin, And Now I want to go out and see what you're talking about. (If there's enough of mine to see what you mean).
Do you have the big flat aluminium tank like me?
Are you talking about down the sides of the tank?
BTW its raining and I still have to dig through 4 inches of snow. on the redneck deck.

Re: Timid but determined Glasstream restoration

OK, I don't have an answer, but I might have a pic.
This is taken from right over the throttle control, looking down at the front of the gas tank and rear of the ski locker (wet carpet) The bulkhead is gone, but the inner stringer ahead of the gas tank forms the side of the ski locker. the outer stringer (bottom of pic and running under whats left of the deck) is about 5 - 6 inches away. Is this where you're talking about? best I could do holding an umbrella.

Hell all,
Will I don't have a pick to show since I have torn it all out already. I do have a pic from when I was in the demo mode but it doesn't really show it all that well.
This is the best Pic I have right now. It is in the center of the pic with foam between the two pieces. It's only 1.5 -2" between them.

I will try to mock up what I think will work tomorrow and take a pic.
Mountain_Man,
That is similar but more space between them then I have.
I did get the rest of the stringers done except were the cross braces are. If the PL sets up well enough tomorrow I will start the glassing.
The wife decided that we were going to a movie and dinner out today. :(
More time away from the boat.
With a little luck I'll get a lot of the glassing completed.

Re: Timid but determined Glasstream restoration

Bob, sounds like your problem is trying to work the glass between the two at the bottom correct?

Could you take a piece of 1/2 ply and round over the edge to use as a squeegee/press? Sort of like a big putty knife with a round edge.

Just an idea, you could just fill the problem area with seacast.

Re: Timid but determined Glasstream restoration

archbuilder,
That is correct. I have enough room to get to the bottom but I never be sure it is sealed good.
Mountain_Man,
I thought about that but the same problem as above.
SKIBUM1M,
Seacast is a good idea but the cost may not warrant it. The area would be about 6" deep, 2" wide and 74 " long. It would cost around $400, in seacast.

I didn't get anything mocked up today but I've kinda put it on the back burner for a week or so. I'm going to get the stringers done before I worry about it. I'll let you know what I come up with. unless someone can think of something else.
I pretty much lost most of my motivation today. It was raining most of the day. It was just chilly and damp. I did finish getting all the stringers bedded in, and the port stringers got the fillets in with PB.
I also came up with another idea to use as a backup if I have problems getting the glass to lay down when I cap the stringers. I made some clamps out of 1.5" PVC and some thin wood strips I had in the shop I use for shims. I covered them with box tape so they wouldn't stick to the poly.
Check it out and tell me what you think.
IMG00236.jpg

Then since I have seen pic's of all of you, I decided to take one of me for you.
IMG00232.jpg

Actually I decide to spare you. This was waiting on me when I got home, it goes with my other new tool.
Well perhaps I can get my motivation back tomorrow for a while, or maybe later tonight.

Great clamp, maybe add a strip on top of the stringer and either push the clamps down to hold it down or add bolts that would push it down. when you start wetting it out it will stretch and may bubble on top.

That just might work. I would be worried about it sticking though. I really did not have any troubles once I started to use the fiberglass roller.
