Put a timing light on the engine.
The timing should be close to ten degrees.
If the timing was on the wrong side of TDC, I doubt the engine would run.
Most maintenance manuals have a picture of the damper and the timing marks.

i put a timing light on it and if im right about btdc it shows it is 18 dgr btdc and its suppose to be at 10-12 and the distributor was pointing at the number 4 jug so im going to go ahead and put a new built on it if i can get the tensioner back on and now the distributor is pointing towards the front of the motor is that going to throw it off time thanks?

Re: timing a 2.3 l omc cobra

hello everyone just a quick up date i put the new timing belt on last night and did a compression check this morning and it was 150lbs across all four holes .the reason i even started to mess with it because i had it out a couple of week ago and it started to run rough and it died on me on the way back in so i took it to a boat shop and they said it was the belt slipped because it was missing and i should replace the belt and check the compression after doing all this it is still missing like there is a bad plug does anyone have any idea what else i should check thanks and i hope this makes better sense of what the problem is
