So I figured out my linkage issues from past posts but now my motor wont start while cold without a headache.

Yes I use choke, yes the carbs are clean and onced over, I use premium unethanoled gas with 50:1 mercury oil, and ived tried every combo to start it.

Fuel/mix screw ive tried everywhere from 1 1/4 to 2 turns out in 1/8 increments simultaneously and no change in starting from cold.

The motor gets a sudden rush and acts like it wants to go but kapoots a few times before firing up, however its fine from a warm start even hours after the motor was shut off. No backfire going on also.

I can not get #1 plug to fire any earlier than 10? the distributor resists and springs back, even with cable's disconnected. It just wont pull to the screw stop. Full throttle I get spark at 35?. I domt know if thats in spec or not but I was thinking 5? not 10?.

Checked compression on the lake after running all day and im at 135psi. Very good in my books (cyl1 133 cyl2 136 cyl3 137 cyl4 135)

I run well after startup I believe. I have no tach and cant figure out exactly what all I need to get one working but thats another story. I just know it doesnt sound excessively high in rpms. It sounds very close to my 50hp that ran 5k rpm wot. Its pushing a 14' bayliner ski boat at 40mph with a 2 blade prop according to gps...Thats what leaves me scratching my head as to why startup is so difficult if top speed and hole shot is great.

Pictures show where my spark is at on cyl#1

ive ran searches on this but quite frankly I dont know what motors are the same as me so I am reaching out, thanks in advance.

I believe you need to remove the wee plate ( belt guide ) in order to check belt timing.

You might tell us the HP and year of the motor. Racer might be able to guess, but I cannot. Some older distributor mercs used 34* max timing, but not all of them.

Take the wee plate off to find the arrow to check belt timing.

Well, Merc switched their motors over to ADI ignition by number of cylinders. That is the last IL6 with a distributor was 1979 1/2. The last IL4 with a distributor was 1975 or 76, if I remember correctly.
