timing belt change out

my timing belt broke and I have another one. I was wondering if there is anything special to putting one on. Will I mess up the timing or anything by just taking off the flywheel and everything I need to get to the belt, installing it and putting it back together. Is there anything I need to line up or anything like that? I know, I know, get a manual. It is on the way, just thought someone might know off the top of their head. Thanks It is for a 1958 merc 58A

In order to change that you need to pull the flywheel and stator if equipped.

There is a tdc mark on the flywheel that can be verified by looking in #1 spark plug hole while turning flywheel,

and an ajoining mark for the magneto under that aluminum disc on top of pulley.

Those belts almost never break, and when they do it's usually because the bearings in the distributor (or magneto in your case) may be failing.

I think it broke just because it is old. Previously, the boat hadn't been even licensed for 15 years. I hope that is the case.
