Timing "Issue"

Morning All,

I was trying to set and/or verify the initial timing on my boat this morning and ran into an issue that I need help with.

First, the particulars: 2000 Volvo Penta 4.3GLPEFS engine, Delco EST distributor and an SX-M outdrive.

I followed the instructions provided by Don, warm engine up, check idle, shut engine down, plug in the distributor shunt but do NOT connect it to 12V until the engine is running.

Well, the first thing I noticed is that the plug where the shunt should go had nothing plugged into it, it was just a rubber cap covering the connector hole. So, I plugged the shunt in, started the engine and once running connected the shunt to 12V+. As soon as I did that, the motor died. I wasn't sure I did it right, so I followed the same steps 2 more times, and both times the engine died when i connected the shunt to 12VDC.

What am I doing wrong or missing?

Thanks in advance.

P.S.
I did check my connections to make sure I wasn't grounding out anywhere, and I'm not (or at least it would appear so)

Re: Timing "Issue"

Next dumb question, the shunt harness has 3 leads. B, C & D. B gets connected to 12VDC, do C&D need to be connected to anything (or each other)? Right now they just have insulated terminals on the end.

Re: Timing "Issue"

UPDATE:

OK, well i figured that one out on my own. I jumped C & D, and it worked fine.

My question now is, on the balancer there seemed to be a mark for TDC (two lines less than 1/8 of an inch apart), the first timing mark was "4" (which was about where it was). If I recall correctly, initial timing is 1 degree BTDC, but there was no "1" mark. Should I just time it slightly past the 2 lines and assume that about 1 degree?

Thanks
