Timing Light

Here's a novice question for ya.<br /><br />I was looking at timing lights on eBay because I was wanting to see how accurate the timing on my 40hp Sea-Horse (RD22) is. <br /><br />There are lights on there ranging from $10-$200. Is there anything specific I would need, or just your basic run of the mill light?<br /><br />Thanks,<br /><br />Matt

You don't need anything special, I use an el-cheapo model myself. Make sure it's got an inductive (clip on) pickup on it as the old style direct hookup types are a real hassle. Ocasionally, some timing lights won't pick up the signal from these weaker ignition systems, but flipping the pickup over often remedies the problem.<br /><br />But getting the timing deadly on a 40hp isn't really all that critical. You can also check it with a continuity or resistance meter, but you have to first disconnect the ignition coils from the points. The reason I don't use that method myself is because you run the risk of changing the timing when you re-attach the ignition coil's lead to the point.
