timing mark for 50hp merc

Just bought small bass boat. the former owner got sick and sold it.He had work done to it by a local shop, the timing belt was replaced on the 1966 50 hp engine. It would not start when he got it back, he said the timing is off how can i check, Help!!!!. JC
