I am trying to set my timing by following slow_boy's excellent write up. The problem is the "tab" on the engine which contains the timing marks is rusted. I can still see the timing marks or points, looks like about six shark's teeth, however, the writing is gone so I can not tell what degree is what. Only thing I can see is where it says before on the left side and after on the right side. I am assuming this is referring to before or after TDC. Can someone please tell me what mark to use or how to do this or am I just stuck with the bad timing I have now? Thanks in advance for the help. The boat is a 89 Searay with a 3.0 mercrusier and alpha one drive all original.

between the BTDC and ATDC is a zero , manual has 6 deg so go for 3 points BTDC but depending on the quality of the fuel its safer to be 0-3 degrees

Thank you for your fast response. So from where it says before I should set it at three teeth down or towards the after side? I can not see any degrees written on it. there is only teeth where the degrees would be written.
