i have a question. I have a mercury 50hp 2 stroke on a 1756 duck boat. I had someone set the timing on it and the mechanic said the timing was off 6 degrees. When he fixed the timing I lost speed! Is this normal?

I would say no. I bet he wasn't a marine mechanic....stay away from auto mechanics for your boat motor....a whole different ballgame

I'll bet he wasn't even a Mechanic of any sort. Any idea how he determined the timing was off 6 degrees? It wouldn't surprise me if he used the Primary Pickup Timing as max advance, though it is usually more than 6 degrees different the max timing
