you need to move the flywheel to 2-4 BTDC (should be 2 black marks on timing sticker) either on flywheel or cowl housing depending on model. once you are there you need to point the arrow at the far right alignment mark on the same timing sticker. you will need to take the timing belt off and turn the distributor gear to align it.

Re: timing old merc help plzzzz

Vision, You might pick up a service manual. Here is the basic procedure.

Remove spark plugs 2-6, and replace them into plug boots and ground all electrodes to block.

Remove spark plug 1 and turn flywheel to top dead center. Look at timing pointer. If it is not close to TDC(off by 45* or more), remove 8 outer flywheel bolts and rotate outer flyweel until pointer is close to TDC. Measure to piston top thru spark plug hole. Add .464" to this measurement

Now turn flywheel CCW a 1/4 turn. Now turn flywheel until piston is .464 BTDC, and adjust timing pointer to read .464 on flywheel decal.

Turn flywheel to TDC and remove distributor pulley cover. Make sure cast arrow is pointing at dot or punch mark on flywheel.

Install spark plug #1 and crank motor. With timing light set throttle to 4-6* BTDC timing. Carbs should just be ready to open. If not loosen 2 small bolts on underside of middle of distributor and rotate brass collar until carb is just touched by distributor fingers. Tighten bolts.

Set throttle to max and crank motor. Adjust max spark advance screw until max timing is 21* BTDC. Tighten nut.

Adjust throttle stop so it stops throttle just before carb are jammed open. Install spark plugs and start and warm motor. Adjust idle mixture in gear ideling in water.

Slash, It could be one dot, or a punch mark in the flywheel metal.

Sure, Remove the transfer cover on the starboard side of the motor and you should be able to reach in with a needlenose plier and grab it.

Steam is not good. That motor should run dead cold at idle. Replace the impeller, wearplate and two gaskets.
