firstly I should tell you that I got this engine as is, with that in mind, this is what I did.
it ran like crap, low compression.. I rebuilt the engine, with a new piston (old one cracked), two cyl. honed and one bored out to .020 with new piston and rings.. took it out today but could not get top end and low end was rough.. I marked all the coils which are firing, but the timing is a way out of whack.. in idle it sits at least 20 degree retarded or advanced.. whichever way you look at it.. when I moved the timing bar to the 8 degree mark, it runs away.. at about 3000 rpm, this is without the carb linkage connected.. is there any way to know which possission the stator is suppose to go?, I am ready to move it 30 degrees to the next set of screws.. I am just looking for an opinion..
note, during wot, it chugs and farts until it pics up speed then it runs fine.. sort of,, it sounds grumbly.. hope this adds to an answer...
thanks
Stan

73s don't have electric or hydro-electric shifts, they were the first year for the hydro-mechanical shift.

this one must have been *******ized, the engine is 100% 65 hp and the lower unit shift changes by a push button helm control.. makes it hard to repair when not sure what exactly is the correct part for that engine..
