Thanks to anyone with answers to these questions....

I have a 1977 Evinrude 55hp and I believe the pick up timing is wrong. I have both the factory manual and a Seloc, and to me, they are both unclear concerning the linc/sync. I understand the cam meeting the roller forcing the throttle to open at the right time. What I don't know is...should this happen as you go into gear, or after? In other words, as it sits now, the line on the cam is in the center of the roller, while it is in neutral. From everything I understand, the timing should advance before the throttle opens. To me it looks as the nylon block on the timing advance rod has been moved. The warm up lever also advances the spark as well as open the carb butterflys? Is this correct, or should the warm up lever only advance the spark?

I really appreciate any help.

I have the same motor in a Johnny but haven't had any issues with the timing advance just everything else.. I think the term you're looking for is link and sync on the timing advance. Describing the trouble you're having may be more help too. I'm going out to fog my Johnny today so I will take a look at it and see what she does

OK, I looked mine over, yes the warm up lever advances both throttle and spark otherwise it would just die with only the timing being advanced. The linkage starts moving the advance lever as soon as throttle is applied and until it hits the stopper.

This is what i do on my motor which is basically the same as yours.
Disconnect the throttle cable and undo the intake cover so you can see the butterflys.
Now, you really need a barrel for this or some way to put exhaust pressure on it but all you do is check the butterflys are closed and then adjust the idle stop screw until the engine just keeps running, Make sure its warm otherwise itl stall out.)
Dont worry too much about the warm up lever, your cables are probably really waorn so it wont accelerate the engine much with it but it will even if worn move the butterflys a bit, which in neutral will give your motor a good little boost.
Now connect up the cable so that the lever goes back to the idle stop ok.
Then put it into full throttle. The butterflys should be hitting horizontal then, adjust them if required.
Last thing to do is to check your timing isnt going to far advanced. Theres a sticky thread on that.

The main thing to acknowledge is that with worn cables you wont get as much power as you may want with the warm up lever but it should be adequate along with bumping the choke during warm up.

Acceleration from idle goes in this order- a little bit of butterfly opening, then its all timing advance and the final bit is the butterflys moving to horizontal.
That is why you get the best fuel economy by not going full throttle as thats when the carbs are fully open whereas prior to that a lot of the power is from just advancing spark
