timing question

Hello all,

I am trying to reclaim an old 1976 "iron duke" Mercruiser 140 with a MC-I outdrive. The motor sat for 2 years and runs extremely rough when I first got it to fire up 2 weeks ago. Since then, I rebuilt and cleaned out the carb Rochester Products 2 BBL and now I want to replace the points and set the timing with my timing light.

Could someone tell me the proper gap the points should be set at and what the timing specification should be for this motor?

Points .022", dwell 31-34 degrees, timing 6 degrees BTDC at 650-700 rpm

Thank you Lt. for the information. I will hunt up my old feeler gauges and see if I can get her running right this weekend

It will be interesting to see how I make out considering it ran so rough at first start up. I could only keep it running at @ 1500 rpm or higher, anything lower, it would stall out. It did not seem to be running on all four cylinders and I am not sure if the problem lies in the timing, carburetor or any number of motor problem I am just excited to discover. After checking the spark plug tips, they all seemed to be the same, no stand out abnormalities.

Might you have any specifications for the initial carburetor jet settings after I install the carb tonight? I believe I set them both at 1.5 turns out from close.

The prelim idle mixture screw setting is 1-1/4 turns I think.
