I want to wait to change the poppet valve since it controls water flow at high rpms and if it was stuck open at low rpms the engine will not reach proper operating temps and it will run cold and will run rough at idle.. one of the post said that the lower unit exhaust divider plate needs to be sealed properly.. he was the only one that was able to bring down the cooling temp..and could be a leaking head gasket,,anyway tomorrow the tach...

I have not had a chance to take it out yet.. I also had to change out the helm pump and seals on the ram. I would think since the thermostat opens at 145 it would be maybe 10 degrees higher, not 175

More use than a water temp gauge is a water pressure gauge.... You see it rise up to about 10 or 12 psi, then drop when the poppet opens...

According to the manual, the switch closes at 115C... (+/- 13C)

Bear in mind, that's a cylinder head temperature, not the water temperature.

oh i thought it was water temp i see the sensing line coming off the head and I did read about people using a pressure gauge also. how is that line taped off of the engine.? bye a small hose or sensor

If you remove the temperature sensor out of the head, all you see is the head, no water jacket. So it's is sensing the temperature of the metal, not the water, although there is water under the metal at the bottom of the sensor hole.

Water pressure is taken by a capillary tube (supplied with the gauge when you buy it) to the gauge mounted in the dash. The capillary tube is secured by a compression olive into a fitting that screws into the top of the engine block.

Is there a plug I can remove to install sensor on water jacket? also I switched the grey lead to the other reg. but still no signal to tach.. I looked for the yellow lead but they are connected to the plug not like the grey wire where you just plug and play

with the engine running can I put a test light on the outlet of the grey wire and see if I am getting a signal from the output of the regulator

I also turned the pole switch on the tach a few times back and forth it was set on number 5 which is 12 poles I guess I will try the test light and try to run a jumper from the yellow wire and try the test light on that too

the thermo valve is set up like the temp gage hollow just sensing the air which is nice no salt water leaks

neither grey wires on the reg are supplying any power. I pierced the yellow wire with my test light and had power.. so do you think I can just replace one of the regulator or just tap off the yellow wire

Personally, I'd just tap off the yellow wire. As for the pressure gauge, use the tube gauge. They're more accurate and introduce less complications. The bore of the tube is so small (about 1mm) that even if it broke off, the amount of water would be very small (and I've never seen a broken one). JMHO.

Each regulator has 2 yellow wires going into it. Pick any one. And either side of the plug, doesn't matter.

There is a 3/8" NPT pipe plug at the top of the exhaust plate. I'd use that.
