1972 Chrysler, 120HP, timing procedure, points type ing.
SELOC manual shows a timing tape on flywheel, mine is gone, if it was ever there. Is it necessary?? Can anyone post timing procedure, with better photos and description than SELOC? Static timing, full throttle running?

Re: Timing Tape

Chrysler used a couple of methods to designate timing on the flywheel. One of them was a decal applied to the ring gear.

However, if the decal is gone, there still should be a mark that looks like io on the ring. It is actually a line indicating 0 degrees.

If that is not there either, then remove the plugs and insert a long screwdriver into the top plug hole and touch the piston top. Rotate the engine until you feel the screwdriver come up to top dead center. Rock the flywheel slightly to either side so you get the feel of TDC. Do this a couple of times and when you are certain, mark the ring gear to match the long line on the pointer bolted to the block.

Now count the teeth in the ring gear (97) and divide into 360. This gives just over 3 degrees per tooth (3.7) Now count to the left 9 teeth from the mark you made. This will be about 33 degrees.
Make another mark.

Chrysler engines are timed at either 32 or 30 degrees advance at wide open throttle. Estimate either. A half tooth is about 2 degrees..

You CAN static time the engine. Be certain the points are set at .010. Remove and ground all the plugs. Then with the ignition on and the engine at wide open throttle turn the flywheel by hand. Adjust the link at the distributor so the top plug (#1) fires when the 30 or 32 mark is on the long line of the pointer.

Re: Timing Tape

Thanks, that makes it a lot more clear. The Forms are a great source
