boat was running pretty good so never really had much reason to check anything but rebuilt the carb and today finally threw a timing light on it. it was at about 4* ATDC. book calls for 8 BTDC. i have a thunderbolt IV ignition so i'm pretty sure i did it correctly. from what i have seen there is no jumper or disconnection or anything. just hook up the light and check? i dialed the knob on my timing light to 8* and set the timing mark on TDC. re-adjusted the idle mixture and idle speed and took it out. i was only ever able to hit about 3800RPM before but today was running at 4400-4500RPM at 32MPH (speed did not change from previous high). i will say that the battery seems to be going bad so the tach may have been off. i went to the fuel dock and was running on the starter battery and my engine temp was bouncing and my tach was about 1500 RPM (i know i couldn't have been over about 800 in the no wake zone). after fueling it cranked slow but fired so went up river and the tach read 4500 at 33 MPH (GPS read) and switched to the house battery that was new last year and coming back i hit 32 MPH at 4400 RPM.

i'm going to check to be sure all connections are tight and may have to replace the running battery. i understand that a bad battery can throw things off but does everything else sound inline for an engine that was that far off on the timing?

Good for you that you set things up and got a correct rpm etc. Yes, you ought to verify that your starting battery is good and electrical system is charging. Verify the charging by watching your gauge, it should display around 14.3 volts when it is running above idle.
If your tach is still off stick your head under the dash and verify the tach is set for 8 cylinders. Boat tachs have a rotary switch that can be changed for different cylinder counts.
