Timing???

Any of you guys know if we can do the timing on a 1999 5.0 efi merc without the merc scanner?
Mercruiser manual says you need to plug the scanner and to adjust to 8btdc. Don?t know why we need the scanner do.

You can set base timing by jumping terminals "A" and "B" on the Data Link Connector (DLC), this puts the engine in Service Mode. Then set check/adjust timing using a common timing light.

Thanks newport dave, so after that only need to place the distributor at 8? btdc?
