If your looking to put a bigger HP motor on then it's rated for then yes beef up the transom.

If you are staying within the rated hp then I would say replace what was there and you will be fine. You new transom will be better than the original IMO.

my thoughts were that if i buy a sheet of ply, i might as well try to use as much as possible. i guess weight might be the only factor, the additional weight of full ply wood vs the "T" style that was there in the first place.

Looking back at your pics and seeing the crack in the upper transom wrap, your idea of beefing up the transom is probably good. You could use two sheets of ply and trim the inner lip off the transom wrap. Install a new C or L cap as you stated. Keep the bottom up about 5 " so it won't ever sit in water.

i may drop the wood down about a inch above the bottom. dont really plan on having too much water sitting in the boat. i pretty much take the boat out of the water even when camping. think the most amount of mass (plywood) the better.
