(/bangs head against wall)now what? surley mercury came out with a tach. for this type of eng? <br />would a regular shop tach.work?..just need to see what rpm i'm running at WoT before i invest in the new prop. any suggestions would be great thx

That answer makes no sense.<br /><br />My 1960 Evinrude Lark 40 has a magneto ignition and a TinyTach works fine with it.<br /><br />It also works fine with my 2004 Johnson, which is also magneto-based.<br /><br />The TinyTach works by an inductive lead wire wound over a spark plug wire. The right model should work with your engine.

That's ridiculous. Their main sales are for lawnmoers and generators and other small engine equipment...they all use a magneto. It works with anything that has a spark plug wire...

just go to your local auto shop and buy a digital hand held inductive pickup tach/dwell meter, it should cost you about $60 <br /><br />Greg

Tiny Tach's dealing with you was so incompetant as to disqualify them from consideration. :( <br /><br />Assuming your 650 is electric start and charges the battery, any modern stator driven tach will work. Just set it for a 12 pole stator and go from there.<br /><br />-W

Tiny Tack will work. But if you want go to your local hotrod shop and talk to them. Most sell a tach for use with a magneto. About 35 to 39 dollars. Alot of the older hotrods had magnetos and some are still in use. Set it for a 4 cylinder and you are in business. Dont remember the name on mine, but will look tomorrow for you. Mine was made to mount around the steering column. Tested it against a known good 2 cylinder tach and mine is short about 100 rpm ,at 5450 rpm mine reads just over 5300 rpm.

when i talked to the tech. he had mention that the noise from such a Mag. would interfere with the Tach. no filter's would help this, to his best of knowledge.<br />i said to him "well, other motor's i know of have Mag's and Tach.,what about those?"<br />his reply was simply "they have shielded wires, and resistor's in-line".<br />my motor is an electric start, and i will try a reg. shop Tach. and see what i can come up with.<br />i'll keep ya's all posted on what i find.<br />thx for the reply's

Mines a PRoCraft. Is about 2 1/2 inches around, has a wire that runs connects to the side of the magneto, one for 12 volt posi and ground. also one that will power the internal light if needed. has post on back to set 4/6/8 cylinder.

I personally use these tachs on my PWC engines, they are cheap, and they update multiple times per second, not ever 4 seconds like a TINY TACH.<br /><br />its called the mini pro, its programmable for 1-8 cylinders, and 2 or 4 stroke, and battery powered ( lifetime sealed 5 years or so) and has one wire to wrap around a plug wire.. thats it.<br /><br /> http://www.usaled.com/main.php3?primNavIndex=2&

Re: Tiny Tach. couldn't help now what?

Thanks all for the help. Not sure why Tiny Tach. couldn't help. I have ordered a tach. that should work and hopefully within a couple weeks i will know what rpm range i'm in and then go spend this money that's burning a hole in my pocket for a new prop.Again thx for all the help)<br />luv this site!
