Tiny Tach

I have heard many good things about these things and would like to get one for my outboard. I have a 1955 5.5 hp johnson. I am also getting a 20 hp mercury. They don't seem to make them for twin cylinder engines is there any place where I can get one for twin cylinder engines. Thanks, Dan

It will probably ork on your '55 OMC. I had a pair installed on my '58 Evinrude 35hp motors - they worked but read double the rpm, which I didn't mind because I wanted the tachs mostly to be able to sync the engines at cruise. The Rudes are now in storage because I put a single engine on the boat, so I put one of the TTs on my generator and one on my lawn mower. Both of these engines are 4 stroke and the TTs work well on them.

Yup, they will. They will also custom make one for you with a longer coaxial cable to run from your steering position to your motor.

One thing that you might want to discuss with them is putting a connector between the end of the wire run where it terminates at the transom and the motor. When I set mine up I made two wiring harnesses for the motors for the ignition, choke, ground, etc. I mounted two stock TTs on my dash and wired them into the harnesses for each engine - ground to ground and the "hot" to an open circuit. At the motors, the "hot" for the TTs terminated with a female spade type connector and I used a piece of smalll gauge, solid core wire with a male spade connector, for the wrap around the number 1 spark plug lead.

This setup is, I'm sure, not something that TT would recommend but it worked. Probably the better way to go about it is to have the custom made units with longer coaxial cable but you will still need to have connectors at the motor, unless you can accept having to disconnect from the inside of the cowling.
