The stator on my '81 50 Evinrude is bad and I want a tach for tuning purposes but not enough to spend $300+ bucks on fixxing my stator.

I want to go with a Tiny Tach but which one do I need?

Re: Tiny Tach?

Not really sure which one to use. Your motor does has 12 alternator poles. For the price of a tiny tach you could likely buy a used tach off of Ebay which includes the wiring harness to connect to your control box. If you go that route, make sure the back of the use tach you get has a dial indicator that would allow you to select "6P"

The support people at Tiny-Tach have been helpful in selection of the correct device. http://www.tinytach.com/

Note: The battery is built-in and not serviceable. Extending the wiring needs to be ordered at the time of purchase.

you can always get the commmercial one like i did.

make sure you isolate it from the rest of the spark plug wires.
