Re: tips on digging out old transom

Bull Frogg

I am at the same point, going out to start the project in the next hour. I really gave a lot of thought to buying a 55 gallon drum full of carpender ants, but what to do with them when they are done ? and I suppose some of them would sneak off. I have my 4 in angle grinder ready and my 8 inch too. skil saw and last but not least my drill and bits. I'll be posting again some time this weekend.

I used a circular saw, set blade deep enough to cut through transom without contacting outer shell, and cut the transom into sections about a foot square. Used a prybar and popped each section out. Bear in mind this was from the inside, and I was resheathing (something I recommend-you get a better end result). I was left with just the shell, which I roughed up with my trusty angle grinder.

I also do it with a circular saw and 8" disc grinder with 36 grit to help. In between those I use pry bars and chisels to get the thick chunks off. The ply skin that was saturated with resin and againt the hull is the hard part.

Bullfrog,

I know it sounds crazy, but a chainsaw works really well. I used a 12 or 14 inch electric and it ate right through the parts that hadn't already turned to mulch. If you remove the inner skin, I have heard (but not tried) that a router works really well.

Just my $0.02 worth,
Joe

Joe,

If you want to keep both the outside and inside skins, I read somewhere that a length of 3/4" steel conduit with the end flattended and sharpened on a wheel worked good for chipping out the old plywood. That was done by someone using the Seacast repair product.

Mark.

Bullfrog,

Another thing, remove any floor next to the transom that you are going to remove first. If you try to work around the floor you will beat yourself to death. If I had it to do over again, I would completely remove the inner skin, then pry the wood away from the outer skin and take it out as one big chunk or at least a few big chunks. But of course my inner skin was worthless and will be replaced anyway.

Another $0.02 worth,
Joe

Thanx for the tips. I actually started to put
last section of floor on and decided to poke the
transom in a spot near the old mount holes.
guess what, first 2 screws in that section had to
come back out, lol. now nothing is in my way so
time to dig.
