Mercruiser Alpha 1 R/MR Alpha One ser.6683545. I plan on building a stand for removal and plan on lowering the drive enough to slide the stand under the skeg before lowering down fully. So the prop will have to be off. My question is when I shift into forward gear do I need to rotate the shaft to lock the shaft? If so,do I need to keep pressure on the prop shaft or will it be good once I lock the prop shaft by rotating it counter clockwise? Also any tips on alignment of the shift shaft would be very much appreciated.I am concerned that when I pull off the drive I will have a hard time putting it back and have it operate properly due to mis alignment of the shift shaft.Thank you-Blair

Check out the sticky on drive stands.... There are many that have built stands (myself included) that allow you to leave the prop installed.

You dont need to lock the prop shaft on drive removal. Simply put the shift lever into FWD and pull the drive (the shift shaoe is lined up by putting the shifter in fwd).

Going back on is another story. You need to rotate the shift shaft on the drive fully CW while rotating the prop shaft CCW till it locks and hold it there during drive installation (thats why leaving the prop on is better, IMO). If the prop is off, there is little chance you will knock it out of FWD during the reinstallation (although it can happen, the risk is low), so you should be ok.
