Ok,
I thought I would put this out there to see if anyone else ever does this or has extra ideas on saving some $$dough going into fall...and have a little fun doing it.
We are trying for the second year in a row to push 'down' our winter heating bill. Now, our house is an older 'heritage' style house from the late 20's/early 30's so although updated, it is not batting 1000 on all fronts for heating efficiency. We do have a new furnace, wiring, well insulated roof and basement and 'some' storm windows on the original (nicely stained) wooden windows.
So what we have been doing is increasing insulation where we can, sealing all the cracks around the windows roof/rafter interfaces, new weatherstripping on the doors and original windows, etc, etc and adding storm (thermopane) windows particular on the vulnerable sides of the house. We have about another 6-8 windows to go before they are all doubled up.
The one thing we have a lot of fun with tho' is leaving the furnace off as long as we can to sort of see 'how long we can go' before we feel the need to turn it on. We have a nice old fireplace so sometimes I will throw on a few logs and bring up the house temp a bit in the evenings.
When you adjust to an increasingly cooler day and evening on a day by day basis its amazing how well you adjust....slowly adding an undershirt or long sleeved shirt, etc.
Now, so far this season our weather is absolutely great...still! We are getting our days in the 18?-23?C. (65? to 75?f) range which is near perfect temperature for me.
Last year we had guests come in late October so in order to keep things comfortable we turned it on....primarily for them and then that was our turning point I guess.
We don't have any actual numbers on how much money this is actually saving us....and I'm sure its more than we think, but its fun and an interesting thing to try.
Next year we might work to get an 'airtight' fireplace insert installed which could arguably get us through one complete winter without the furnace on.
Sidenote: Up here in Victoria- B.C....we have a pretty mild climate compared to some parts of the north. Our climate is probably very much in step with what you find out of the West Virginia or thereabouts.....for reference sake. So we don't get the 1-2 months of snow, blizzards, ice, etc, etc that you find elsewhere. We do howevere.....get the rain....hence the great rainforest beauty of this part of the world.
Any good ideas on improving and saving some dough are always appreciated guys....so let me know if you have any.
My two bits.

I've been told fat girls keep you warmer. :D

I've heard that too....I'm outta luck on that one tho'.;)

That said, the money you would save with a fat girl keeping the heating bills down....would have to be dumped into the grocery bill!!!.....maybe a bit of a 'lose/lose' situation at the end of the day...and the night....and the morning:D:D

Around The Hideout I save about $100-$150/mo. by turning off the AC. I use about $50 worth of propane a month in my furnace and keep the chill off with my heat circulating fireplace. Fall/Winter thermostat at 60f in the day and 55f at night.

My house (48X24, 1100sq ft Signal) was built to my order in 1999 with the Rocky Mountain insulation package and double pane glass all around.

Freezing yourself is false economy as you make up the difference with more food, BURP!!
You know about all the electric gadgets that eat power when they are off (parasitic consumption I think its called)

Light from a southern exposure can heat a home well especially on the island.
And YUP, get the air tight insert with the biggest blower available (luv the blaze king, little pricey but worth it)

Look at getting a Corn/Rice-coal/Wood-pellet insert for your fireplace. :)

You can find them on Craigslist sometimes for half the price of new.

Pretend your an ancient settler, and go ALL winter without consuming anything beyond personal needs.

Go without deodorant, and skip the conditioner.

Wipe 1/2 as often.

Simple Savings 101.

Turned the furnace on 2 mornings now since fall has arrived but when the house drops below 60 it's just too cold for comfort.

We easily have extra dough to spend on a bit weatherstripping in the savings we get from being a 'hurricane' free zone:eek:.....heh, heh.:D:D (.....uhhh, speaking of which.....what is a hurricane? I've never seen one.....)

All good

We have a small unvented natural gas 'fireplace'...not only keeps in 100% of the heat it generates, it adds moisture as well. Also great in power outages as it doesn't require any electricity.

Here is another thing about fall.....its usually 'renovation and yard update and clean-up time'. I can't over the amount of great opportunity there is out there to get drywall, bricks, mortar, windows, bags of cement, insulation, lumber, plywood, etc, etc from homeowners who don't know what to do with what is left over or unused from their renovation.
I've watched some of our local used websites and the deals on some of this stuff is amazing....a lot of is virtually free.
I have no problem paying for 'new' stuff when needed....but I never shirk at the possibility of grabbing 2 free full unopened bags of insulation and 1/2 dozen sheets of drywall. ;)
I swear, my basement renovation (bathroom/bedroom/TV room) is really turning a corner and I swear I don't even have $4000 into it. The most expensive items in that amount were the new (very) heavy duty macerator toilet/pump and the high end circular shower...these 2 items were probably close to $2000 of that $4000 estimated total.:D
Damn, as I drive away from some of these free pickups used cheap purchases.....I'm almost laughing out loud at this stuff and these kinds of opportunity.
Is anyone else diving into the fall renovations? or yard upgrades?

You can keep the hurrykains and hot weather.

This was one of the hottest summers I can remember, and I only had the wind unit in the bedroom on for about 10 days.

My electric and propane bill runs about $2000 for the year. (and my house leaks like a sieve)

....Rob, we are enjoying the sun and nice days down here. If we are lucky we won't have freezing temps for quite a while (wish me some 'coastal luck' on that one). We will however have rain so while the sun is out I'll take it- every minute of it. ;):D
I still have lots of time to keep going on the outer reno's including some painting and masonry work this Thanksgiving weekend.

I keep threatening to buy one every year except a propane version. We don't have a backup heat source. Power goes out and the boiler wont work.....:facepalm:

Year before last, I bought an internet controlled thermostat for my vacation/rental house. Besides being able to control the temperature remotely, it also has motion sensors to set back the temp automatically when people leave.

hurricanes are like tornadoes with warning. that being stated, back to the thread of reducing heating costs.

my old 1923 house (a few houses ago) was great, however sucked in winter. after fully insulating the walls (because a sheet of newspaper wasnt going to cut it), a new furnace, etc. I added storms, 3M shrink wrap, used seal-n-peel caulk to seal up the sashes for winter. every little bit helped

I made a few thermal heaters from a piece of black stove-pipe and a 2x6 as a base. placed them in front of the southern windows to heat the rooms. I also wore a lot of sweat shirts, kept the house at 64, and slept under a 6" down feather quilt.

sold the house to move up. then eventually got sick of winter and took a job in Florida.
