Tire blow out

New guy here, using new tandem trailer, 20' Nitro bass boat. Trailer and tire combination has less then 250 miles it, trailering boat home got in driveway and the forward tire right side torn to bits, had no idea tire was blown whilem towing (approx 20 miles). The tire, ST Radial by Trail America was brand new had the proper inflation etc. Question, is this damage beyond repair covered by the manufacturer or? An insurance claim with the deductable probably is not worth the effort. This scares me, luckely the trailer is tandem...any suggestions will be great appreciated.

The front right tire on a tandem trailer is the most vulnerable to getting hit by deep pot holes and curbs and is probably why yours failed.

when towing turn the radio down, you had to have heard that tire. you need to learn to listen for changes in the normal sounds, like bearing, tires, any unfamilar noises. your mirrors should also be adjusted so that with a little leaning forward you can see your load.

Call the manufactuer of the trailer and explain to them what happened. They should send you a replacement tire and wheel...

Could have been something on the road, but as mentioned pay close attention to your tires and axles when towing. My rear view mirrors are always angled down so I can see the tires and hubs.

Maybe it's because I'm used to having old stuff, but one could argue that I'm overly obsessive (almost to the point of paranoia) about watching my wheels/tires on my trailer. I'm still trying to figure out how the blown tire wasn't felt from inside the tow vehicle... My van/boat combo was NOT happy when I had to roll it on three wheels for a couple miles (you can find that story in a different thread.) Hopefully the manufacturer will help you out!

seems to me under normal road conditions the tire should hold up better than that. However, like it has been said you could have hit something. Although radio on or not I would think I would know if I hit something. Go back to where you bought it first to see if they will do anything for you.

I'm still trying to figure out how the blown tire wasn't felt from inside the tow vehicle...

My 1st Guess is,.........

You had a Flat,+ Didn't notice it........
Once Flat, the casing heated up,+ Disintergrated.......
And,.......
When you go after a Warranty Repair,........
The Tire people are going to say the Same Thing,......

In other words,...... I Really Doubt you're going to get a new Free Tire.......

Thank all of you for your comments. The cause will always be a mistery why this tire blew. I did not have the radio on, the tire preasure was 45lbs and to think the dealer would replace is a joke. So, I replaced the tire with a like item, in this case a Carliel (sp?) I will monitor very closly the boat while towing for piece of mind. Bond-O I think you are right on the money. Thanks again... Bond-o has it.
You most likely picked up a nail, it lost air, over heated to the point of coming apart.
To demand a free replacement tire in that scenario only costs the rest of us more $$ when we buy tires.

If the tire was defective, them they should replace it. What costs us money is when we buy defective products and have to buy new ones out of our pockets. He had proper inflation, didn't hit anything, no nails and it only had 250 miles on it. For what it's worth, when I boat my new boat in March and I was trailering it home (30 Miles), I also had a blowout at about 45 MPH on the highway. It happened while on a smooth overpass. Cool day also. Well, needless to say, I was upset. (Did I mention these were also Trail America tires??) Soon as I made it home I called the dealer and of course he was of no help. Next I called and emailed the trailer manufactuer. 2 days later I had 2 brand new (Different brand) tires with 2 new wheels. It never hurts to complain when you have a bad experience..

If the tire was defective, yes I agree.
But how do you dechiper from his posts that he did not pickup a nail?
The tire was "torn to bits", and he has no idea how it may have happened.

Now if your blowout was in a sidewall or there was enough of the tire still on the rim to examine for no punctures prior to blowouts, yes it could be a structural problem.

You got lucky in that you recieved two new tires and wheels for one blowout. Did the trailer builder see the damage or ask for them to be sent in to be examined? Or ask for the D.O.T build numbers of the tires?
If not, they went with your word?
Or they new they had installed some hence recalled bad tires on some of their trailers?
How many times do you think the trailer builder can do that before they have to raise trailer prices or go under?

Who is this trailer builder? Might be an easy way to obtain new tires and rims for a trailer by just complaining to them?

Ok, you're right. I guess I should have just sucked it up and went and bought a new tire and rim for my 1/2 hour old trailer. Now I feel bad for screwing up the economy.

IMHP with even GOODYEAR trailer tires coming fron CHINA and the recent BIG recall of 450,000 thousand CHINESE TIRES it is highly likely it was a defect

The first thing I would do is check the manufacturing date on the tire. You can buy an old tire at any tire store. If the tire is over 6 years old, get it replaced at your earliest opportunity. Mileage is unimportant, age is what gets most trailer tires. Always check the manufactured date when buying new tires.
