That warning was likely written by a New York Attorney, as are all of those rules that are impossible to understand, or make no sense.

I have a good friend who is a NY attorney. When Eliot Spitzer Was caught with a hooker, I asked him "Would you care to explain your role in all of this?" Of course, when the lights went out at the Super Bowl last year, I suspected him again. He doesn't seem to mind these questions.

Basically, I blame the NY attorneys for most of the dumb laws in the world. It is usually a good guess.

All it says is that you don't want to go over 32 PSI until the beads are seated. You think that is unreasonable?

So just a FYI, the tires survived 800 miles on the road this weekend! Yeah, I knew it was for bead seating only, still an amusing warning, especially considering that a fair number of people have no idea what bead seating is... (and until I cleaned the sidewall up, I didn't see the bead part, so that was what actually spawned the whole thread.)

My tow vehicle tire on the other hand... I hit the unlucky 1 in a million jackpot I think. Drove over a black rubber tarp strap and was lucky enough for the S hook to imbed itself in my tire. It whipped around and turned the fender liner into confetti, and of course, left me with a flat in the middle of no where, at 5 degrees above zero, with a 30 mile an hour wind. Fun times!

Lol I've been fixing cars for a long time and I'm not afraid of pumping air into the tire at a higher psi then recomened just to seat the bead lol don't be scared

Just wait until you have a bead jump the rim and hit the hand holding the air chuck. Trust me, after that happens once and you regain the feeling in your hand - you'll be the right amount of scared.

That's where a 25' hose with a snap on chuck on one end and an inline air gauge comes in handy. Was pumping up an ATV tire one time trying to get it to seat, and had just a tad over it was supposed to have. So much so that I was hiding behind a car.

Finally popped on there after 40 some psi...

Blew one on the rim with ether one time, overdid it a tad. Needless to say it went on, but it looked like a balloon. How it didn't blow it over, I don't know.

Story of a guy who did that with his mud truck tire. Blew it over the rim, and the concussion from it knocked a horseshoe off the wall and some other stuff around. Luckily, he was smart enough to make him a trail so that he wasn't standing beside it...

The tire soap works most of the time, though those danged Honda ATV rims give anything some trouble.

somehow I don't think making a trail to light is enough to justify calling that guy smart


I saw the x ray the day after of a kid who exploded a tire seating the bead... looked like 8 or 10 breaks to me... he was in the hospital hoping to keep his arm... they told him he had a 40% chance

There is a trick to it use a locking air.chuck and keep hands and feet away Frome the beed when you inflate it lol :))

And there is nothing like the proper amount of tire lube on the beed or the tire and you shouldn't have to put alote of air in the tire

And let's not forget safty if you are not paying attion as to how much aur you are putting in a tire then you need to start becouse it can be dangerous that is why there are air pressure cutoffs on your tire changing tables and you choose to use a air line then pay attion to your psi

It's not impossible to damage the bead this way and have it blow out later
Do what you want but the REAL trick is not using excessive air pressure to seat the bead if at all possible.
In over 20 years of DIY tire mounting I have only encountered one tire that I couldn't seat without excessive pressure and it was a front on my old yamaha tri-Z ..... And yep that one was done with the 50' hose and setting pressure from the regulator....
Definitely agree on the lube and will add that cleaning the bead seat on the rim can make a huge difference too.

Yup, lube it and then tap on it with a rubber mallet it all it generally takes. I find that trailer tires are the worst to get seated, never have any problems with my big mud tires.

I used to have to mount tires on cast-spoke rims in my youth. We had an inflatable small tube that you would locate around the circumference of the tire first, cinching that thing around the middle of the tire tight, then inflated it so the tire would not balloon as much when inflating to seat the bead. Seemed to work ok, can't remember what it was called. I wish I had seen the butane method back then though I may not be here today had I tried that... :)

Over the years there has been a lot of different tools to help seat the beed I know witch one you are talking about and it was very useful

The best tool now is the bead cheetah out 125 psi in tank the give a blast to the tire and then all set

Many years ago, maybe 30 now, a good friend of mine was changing his own tires and was seating the bead on one, Let's just say it didn't go we'll. His wife found him on the garage floor when she got home.

The rim had sheared off a good portion of his skull and brain, but he was still alive. After many months in the hospital and several years of therapy he leads a somewhat normal life now, buts he's not the same person he was before.

What a tragedy... Amazing how fast life can go from saving a little money or time to losing everything (or close to it)
