How large is your anchor? How deep do you anchor?? I have 30 feet of 1/4 chain and a 25 lb anchor and my wife pulls that by hand at 46 yrs old. She's done this for the last 9 years. Sure she wants a windlass on the next boat. How hard it is really to hand retrieve the anchor?? Are you having an issue raising it, or breaking it free from the seabed?

Last year, I used the biggest Trac (model 45 maybe?) anchor winch here on iBoats. Oddly, it has 1/4" line. But if you go to some rope manufacturer websites, you'll find lots of small diameter rope that will significantly out perform most of the 1/2" rope us boaters use.

That being said, the winch worked great. I have a 25 pound plow style anchor and a muck/mud bottom. The key is getting it off the bottom. I'm a former power lifter and I'm telling you that thing was a b!tch to get off the bottom. Once broke free, the winch pulled the anchor up no problem. There were a handful of occasions where I used the winch to break the anchor free, but I wouldn't recommend it. The best way was to use the boat engine and drive up on the anchor position while reeling in the line until it's basically vertical. Then cleat the line off and the motion of the waves will usually break the anchor free. in a few rare circumstances, I'd just pop the motor into gear for a second and then back to neutral. Again, the boat did the work of breaking free not the winch. Once broke loose, just use the up switch.

Speaking of switches, I also had the remote switch mounted on the helm. Otherwise you need a second person.

As Shrew mentioned,... More information is needed. What type of boat, where do you use your boat, what size and type of anchor are you using.

More than a bit difference in the hardware needed for a 5lb mushroom anchor with 30 ft of 3/8" line, and a 35 lb Danforth with 10 ft of 1/2" chain and 200 ft of 5/8" line.

No Title

We had one on our bass boat and it seem to be more of a pain than anything so we just took it off because it was easier to just pull it by hand. Also minn Kota makes some I've seen guys use but if you got a decent size anchor as dingbat said anchor balls work great.

Ok lets talk! the boat is a 28 ft proline , i have a 20lb anchor as well with a 6 ft 5/16 chain . about 50-75 feet out at a time. Most times 3-5 footers we also fish in packs of boats at least 75 - 100 boats sunday.no ball can be used! we moved 11 times sunday to find perch! at 60 years old 3 of us dont want to pull any more. thats why the question about a drum winch. i dont have room up front for a windless so i punched in the barrel winches! they look cool. also the little one on the bass boat looks like on the front of a trailer. thanks giuys

Ever look at the powerwinch capstan? That may work for you. Could mount it just about anywhere on the rail since it is only used for pulling.

Are you fishing for Perch or Tarpon? That's a lot of work for Perch, but we've been there done that. Isn't it nice when a guy pulls in between you and the boat next to you and you are fender to fender looking for a few Jumbo's here on Erie. I've asked more then 1 guy if he would like me to move for you? That would be great has been the reply more than once. If it is freshwater perch you fish for get an I Pilot with anchor lock. A beast of a system.
