Tired of pumping that gear lube? Try this?

I was getting tired of pumping that gear lube. I had a weed sprayer lying in the garage. Fit the adapter on the end with a clamp and voila. 5 pumps pressurized the tank and when I open the valve the air pressure does the filling. Filled up the stern drive in no time. Just wanted to share my DIY tool.

I use the same sort of set-up to fill my car gearbox, transfer case and differentials. Obviously not with the adaptor, I use a short length of copper tube 'U' bent. Just hang it in the hole...

I'm wondering if the components of that/those sprayers will hold up to the oil, especially if you leave it loaded with oil between uses.

Great idea! I do hope you fill it with the drive level (all the way down) though.....

Yes, this pic was taken after draining and me putting the connector in. I then trimmed down and filled until it started coming out of the vent plug. It eventually filled the reservoir to the level required. Next year will tell if the sprayer will hold up . It sure was neat though watching it fill while having a beer.

Ayuh,.... I built 1 like that years ago, after seein' the 1 Rodbolt built,...

Mine is a 1 gallon metal canister with the plastic pump,...
I pulled off the original hardened up plastic hose, 'n used automotive rubber gas line, a 1/4" ball valve, a short piece of clear tubin', 'n a metal drive fittin', stolen from an ole 1 qt. pump,....

It's been fulla Mobil 1, 75W-90 for years now, with no ill effects,...

I went one step farther. I made up a hydraulic quick disconnect fitting (similar to an air line coupler) with the different adapters for the different sized oil plugs. I connect the fitting to the lower plug then attach my vacuum oil extractor. Take out the top plug and pump the extractor to quickly drain the oil. Disconnect the extractor coupler, plug in the fill pump and fill until oil comes out the upper vent plug hole. Install the upper vent plug, disconnect the lower vent plug and pump. Re-install the lower plug with a new gasket. Done.

Gear oil change in 3 minutes. No mess.

We've been using bug spray bottles for years in the offshore ROV industry... The systems we have use hydraulic oil and the easiest way to fill is with these bottles. And the only reason we replace them is if they wear out, or get broken due to rough handling... I've seen them over 10 years old and still working fine... The oil had no affect on any part of them...
