Does anyone have experience with a titanium prop? if so what are the advantage's / disadvantage's? I have not been able to find anything online about them... Thanks.

Re: Titanium!?

Outside of the cost I think the issue is the other metals they mix in to get the tensil strength they are looking for at a given thickness. Seems like I heard the Turbo guys talking about that once. Maybe it was the way it would flow when in a liquid state compared to ss. Can't remember the whole thing but I'll ask next time I speak to them.

Re: Titanium!?

Titanium is very light so it would rev up faster than a stainless prop at the hole shot. BUT, that's kind of like the old argument of dragsters about heavy flywheel versus light flywheel

Titanium is going to be way more expensive. Although it is one of the most abundant minerals (Titanium dioxide) on earth, it is difficult to refine to mass metal and a BI**H to machine.

It is very strong! I remember when I was attending the Academy of Aeronautics, the arresting hooks for carrier aircraft were forged titanium.

Interesting story. The instructor was describing the difference between a casting and a forging. He said that when dropped, a casting will "clunk" and a forging will ring. Then he threw down the forged arresting hook on the concrete floor. Sound went right through our heads and our ears rang for a couple of minutes.

Re: Titanium!?

Cost isn't an issue as the prop is used and can be purchased for about the same price as a Michigan wheel Aluminum prop. Was just wondering if there was an advantage/disadvantage i.e. strength VS cost of repair etc.

Thanks

Re: Titanium!?

If it's the same cost as an aluminum prop it'd sure be worth it just to see / have one.

Re: Titanium!?

I may be wrong(its been known to happen) but isn't Titanium stronger than Stainless? My concern would be if you hit an object with an aluminum prop or stainless prop the damage usually is contained to the prop. I would think a hit to aTitanium prop is going to possibly end up causing more internal damage. True?

Well that settles it. I'll be picking it up. I will post some pics and my impressions of it when I get the century back on the water. Thanks for the replies.

Aluminum props usually bend, crack, or break when you hit something solid, stainless usually the hub gives away which is what it is meant to do, but can also damage the lower unit, very rareley will you damage a stainless prop. If the cost of titanium is close to stainless its probobly not a bad deal but if its much more i woudn't say its worth it
