Yes boats have titles, I would call the SOS.
I think you will need a bill of sale and you may have to have her file for lost title.
If you go to a SOS Supercenter they can print out the title right there for an additional fee (I think $8 or $10)

Here is your answer:

Transferring Ownership of a Watercraft

If the watercraft is not titled, simply complete the back of your watercraft registration. If you have lost the registration, then a complete bill of sale with the year, make, hull identification number, registration number (if available), and the names and addresses of the buyer and seller may be used to transfer ownership.

If the watercraft is titled, the assigned title is used to transfer ownership. If the title is lost, a duplicate title can be acquired by the owner from a Secretary of State Branch Office. Without an assigned title, a court order or surety bond is needed to transfer the ownership. For watercraft not titled or subject to the title law, the assigned registration is used to transfer ownership. A bill of sale from the registered owner may also be used. For more information contact our Information Center at 1-888-SOS-MICH (1-888-767-6424).

If the new owner does not want a title and the watercraft does not need a title to list a lien (bank loan), the previous owner's title is surrendered when the buyer transfers the registration into their name. The Secretary of State Branch Office will arrange to have the previous title cancelled.

If the boat is over 20' it must be titled, if it is under 20' it is optional.
Anything with power - electric or gas must be registered.

Re: Title Transfer

I believe that Tubingluvr is correct. I have bought two titled boats over the past three years. In the first example, the owner did not know that it was titled. The secretary of state claimed that it was. Turned out that the secretary of state was wrong. When they looked back at the records in the computer, it was not titled. In the second case, the boat had a title. I had the secretary of state de-title the boat when I bought it. Because there was no lien on it, there was no requirement for the title. No hassle next time. To license the trailer here, no title is required. A bill of sale is all that is required. Catch is that the trailer does require a VIN. If you cannot find the VIN, you must get it weighed, and then get a "new" vin assigned. Not a big deal, in my case the vin was securely hidden and this was not a big hassle.
