Well I finally bought a couple of lever drag reels for trolling, I've been wanting them for some time now instead of using my star drag reals. There going on a couple of 7' Ugly Tiger sticks, I'm curious as to ask what type line do you all use for your trolling line? They'll be used for Kings, mackeral, Grouper, and dolphin, what do you think? Mono, or Braid ?

Re: TLD 15's

I have not fished salt water since I discovered Power Pro, but I would be inclined to use it anyway.

Plus: Smaller diameter yeilds less water resistance when running fish turns, allows more line on smaller spool.

Minus: No stretch may result in rougher shocks on gear with a big fish. Using 100 or so yards of mono backing can ease this when a fish is way out but you have to be careful when they are close, because the zero stretch makes it easier for the fish to tear off.

Re: TLD 15's

On my similar sized reels I'm using #65 Power Pro as my running line. I then tie (double uni-knot) 15-18 foot of #40-50 mono on the end for use as a shock leader.

I use the #65 not so much for the stretch as much as for safety. The thinner lines will cut you like a razor should you get tangled up in a line at the back of he boat.

Re: TLD 15's

I lived in SoCAl most of my fishing life, driving an hour to San Diego and hitting big Albies, bluefin & Big Eye tunas on straight 50 lb mono on the TLD reels on a 6 ft med-heavy CalStar stick, never busted one off and took some nice 40lb plus fish.
Been in FL five years, been fishing 4 or 5 times, go figure

Re: TLD 15's

Tell me about it..:(
It's really work that keeps the stick outta my hand, I usually travel 2 weeks out of the month, but I only work half a day everyday (12hrs lol)
Thats why I picked up this 18 footer as a project to keep from going insane!
Now I just have something new to drive me crazy on top of work! lol
My other half, well she would be happy fishing off FMB pier, kinda hard to go from 150 miles offshore to a pier..a PIER..Good Grief!

Tight lines, enjoy those TLD's Frankie G!

Re: TLD 15's

Well IMO Okumo doesn't come close to the Shimano TLD's I didn't want somthing that big...I've got plenty of big rigs. The 15 is smaller and has a better drag system, lighter, and has a much better reputation, personally I don't think that combo would last up against a few big Yellow fins...TLD's have been around a long time and are pretty much a bullet proof reel. Besides I already have 2 Tiger Ugly stix for them which will make a great trolling rig. I own 4 of the Tigers and they are...for the $$$ GREAT rods. 140.00 reel 60.00 rod 7.00 Cajun Red line = $ 207.00 per rig that will BLOW away the Okuma combo for 199.00. or even 179.00 with the discount, but Thanks for the heads up though. :) By the way...I'm a N.J. transplant, I moved from Vernon Valley N.J. to here in SW. Fl. Cape Coral 29 yrs ago, love it here. Used to work at the Playboy club a yr. before it closed down.

I use powerpro 65# on mine and we troll for grouper the lures seem to have more action due to no stretch we use it for bottom fishing too you're able to turn the grouper alot faster.
