TM Plug & Socket wiring

I'm down to the last little bit of wiring for my 24v trolling motor. I've got what I hope is an easy question to answer for many of you.

As recommended I've used a good quality 6 gauge wire to connect my 2 12v batteries in series. I've used a good quality 40 amp circuit breaker. Now I need to wire these to a trolling motor socket that I plan to install in the bow of my boat. I bought this Attwood socket plug set from Wallmart. The wires comming out of the socket look to be 10 ga. What's the best way to connect a 10ga. wire to a 6ga. wire? Is this advisable, or should I invest in a better plug/socket combo? I wouldn't mind investing more bucks if I have to, but I was really counting on using the TM this weekend.

Any recommendations are appreciated.

Joe – I know nothing about Tm’s. Ancor makes marine electrical goodies including a connectors. I image they make something like what you need. Middle of the page:

http://www.ancorproducts.com/

Perhaps someone else knows of other marine connectors.

Joew
If it is 10 gauge and you put in 6 gauge wire then I would take it back. They have some 12 volt 8 guage here at I boat and if you are useing a 2 wire system I think they will work fine. West Marine also has both 12 and 24 volt 8 guage plugs and sockets.

A 10 guage wire should not have a circuit breaker over 30 amps. 40 amp breaker is ok for 8 guage. With 6 guage wire run most of the distance it will make a big difference in voltage drop. As far as connecting the wires you can use wire crimps for 6 guage wire, or you can solder. I like to put some heat srink tubing on the wire and slide it down away from the heat then solder wire, tape it, and then slide the heat srink over conection and shrink. For wire this heavy take a good soldering iron.

I think it's ConnectPro that makes a TM plug and receptacle AND an adapter that accepts 6 ga wire. You'll need all 3. I wouldn't bother with the one that has the 10 ga installed. Good Luck!

EDIT: I still had it bookmarked. The top 3 items.....

web page

Joew,

How did the TM installation turn out? Have you had the chance to try it out yet?

Al
