Re: to all my tinny friends !

Sounded alot like a commercial for full bore boats to me.....i guess thats all okay though provided all glassers have that type of mat in the outer skin.....

They didnt seem to take into account the extra inertia a glass hull would have in an impact due to the additional weight.....if thats the case the test was flawed imo.

Re: to all my tinny friends !

that was 3 layers of 1708....a chopped hull will be about the same due to the fact they are thicker than the 3 layer layup.

btw.....this was actually posted in good fun.....

just looking for some of the tinny guys to take shots at the glassers!

Re: to all my tinny friends !

When I was a little kid growing up I always used to tell my family and friends that I hoped I would never own a boat that rots from the inside out and they would all tell me to never buy a fiberglass boat.

I listened to them.

Metal rules and fiberglass is for fools!!!

btw...... i have reapired major damage to glass hulls and tinnys......both were high impact with rocks......the glass hull was smashed. ripped apart.....but still floated and was easily able to make the dock.
the impact was approx 50 mph.

the tinny's hull was covered with thick UMHV. so the extra layer of composit spread the impact damage area....but still bent the boat right at the aft bulkhead.....the boat was a total loss from an insurance poinf of view. the boat was going over 43 mph.

both of these boats were in simmelar collisions.....and both were glancing blows. at speed......unless its a dead bang on nose on wall.....most hits are glancing......there for, inertia is transfered rather than stopped......so i think the test was as fair as it could be.

both boats were repaired and are now back in service.......but because one was metal......it was fixed far easier than the glass boat.

To be fair...

I ran some tests on a Baja glasser...

Yah, didn't hold up well at all.

Now, just so you guys know I'm not biased, I ran some additional tests on this 4Winns...

Yup, that one got all trashed as well.

By comparison, my two metal boats are doing quite nicely these days. Now, I'm not claiming to be a "scientist", per say. But that is some pretty convincing evidence right there!

That is true, but, i'd rather be cut by tin than get "an itch that makes a raging case of herpes look mild". :D

When I saw this thread I started to itch.

I've had both and liked them both for different reasons. I compare this to the roller vs. bunk trailer debate, depends on what you like and how you intend to use it. The important thing is we all have a passion for boating.

Had to link that vid in my signature. All in good fun!

I'm pretty sure oops could've made one helluva 25' rig out of "Thumper" the Baja:D:D

I have nothin but respect for guys who choose to do things the hard way and restore old glassers. They can't all be used as yard planters;)

Anyone have the contact info for Mythbusters?

Methinks oops licked his finger and stuck it inside the houseboat inverter and is suffering the effects of unintentional electroshock therapy. Thank the lucky stars he wasn't in a tinny.

What happened? Did you look at those boats wrong? Did you taunt them?

One of things I have quickly come to appreciate about the "dry dock" in particular is that we can have good fun about our particular preferences. You tin guys support us as we dress up like bee keepers and grind away like mad men, and we glassers happily embrace and support the never-ending stream of new threads entitled "Leaking stracraft....please help."

I may, or may not have, been laughing (in an entirely hearty/evil sort of way) while I was man handling those glassers:D

support the never-ending stream of new threads entitled "Leaking stracraft....please help."

Those numbers pale in comparison to the...

"I just bought a fiberglass boat and now I think the deck is soft. Do you think I also need to replace the transom/stringers too? Can't I just lay another deck on top of the one that is now mulch?"

So many of those threads I am beginning to wonder if those glassers come from the factory that way:eek::D

Rock on glass boat brohams:)

Re: to all my tinny friends !

Well it's like this - Think of the Seacast threads, the advice on glasser transom repair starts with grab a chainsaw. Jason just cut to the chase and started with the chainsaw and skipped right to the inevitable land fill phase. Saved the cost of Seacast and gained some tin-worthy glasser parts. SCORE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i think that is just due to the fact that the glass boats out sell metal boats 4000-1 compared to the more beautiful, more seaworthy, more elegant, more easy to get chicks in, nicer, more common, more socially accepted, more politically correct, fibreglass boats
