sea ray, never heard of it, it must be fake......

i was actually thinking of doing the infusion for the rest of my stringer and bulkhead glassing so i can do it in my garage and keep the odor down and get it all done in 2 shots, the stringers then the bulk heads and floor pieces. man would that speed things up for me and put me way ahead...... hmmmm now i really have to think about it so i dont get all eetchy.

let me have another look at your thread bud.....infusion can be a different process.......be right there.....after i shoot down s a few of these metal heads.....the reevit bashers.....lol

Us tinny guys would just hunt down a big ol' 1" reeevit, slather it with 5200 and call it a day..

What we don't know is if the Aluminum was the same thickness and what grade it was. A piece of 1/16 6061 would punch right through but a piece of 3/16 or 1/4 5383 H32 wouldn't hardly ding. My bottom is 3/16 5383 and the sides are 1/8 5383 but most production boats like the Starcrafts are 1/16 6061. It would be hard to actually say if the tests are fair or not. My guess is that they are somewhat biased. I like tin but don't have anything against glass either.

Yes but we don't know what grade it was. Makes a ton of difference. Watch that Harbercraft/Jetcraft vid. Of course I'm pretty sure that boat has the rock guard bottom. I have the Jetcraft 1625 which is made by Harbercraft/Jetcraft in Vancouver, BC. It is one tough boat even without the rock guard bottom. I was rock dancing last week and barely scratched it. I mean that yes I did scratch up the bottom but it wasn't anything to worry about and I got the fish I was chasing. I know I wouldn't have done what I did in a glass boat and I don't care who made it.

All that's not to say that this particular glass boat isn't superior to most others. I think it probably is but put it up against a custom built heavy aluminum hull like the Jetcraft, Harbercraft, FishRite, Duckworth or North Rivers and I really don't think it would have a chance.

actually i would put glass thru that any day and go for it.......however,,,,,its the gellcoat that would not take those kind of whacks.......but the glass would.

this is the real reason why tin boats exist.........you can beat the sh*t out of them.....paint some gluvit on them and your good....

tinnys are just for a different purpose than glitter or (glass) boats......that's why fighting about what is better is so useless....its just a different boat for different water....and there are some cross overs !.....

fighting about what's better is stupid............but poking fun at the other types of boats is just great...good clean fun. especially here on iboats restoration section.
just another reason to share laughs with our friends on this forum......

so if anybody is seeing this thread and getting hot under the collar about there favourite kind of boat.......chill !

i drool when i see a beautiful tinny (but not a starcraft )
a tinny with a jet drives like a sprint car and will leave brown spots in your shorts.


and im sure the metal boat guys do not look at a really great restoration or new glass boat and call it names....

Actually it's a 200hp Merc Sport Jet.. An outboard turned into a inboard with a jet pump.

Edit, I agree with the rest of your post, too. Not here to fight and not trying to make a point but I am trying to be fair. FYI that Harbercraft has a UHMV bottom so that's kinda cheating.

the thunder jet i worked on had that stuff on the hull.......that was the boat that hit the rocks at over 40 mph.......

i think that a metal boat with that stuff on it could go thru anything.....i would not even worry about doing what the guy in the vid was going thru

Regarding the boat test pics on page 1, I remember a commercial a few years ago for a European car where it was headed for an impact test wall. At the last second the car swerved. The narrator said "at xxx, we strive to miss the wall"

On youtube there are a bunch of vid's of the Harbercraft/Jetcraft boats doing some amazing stuff. I think you can see some of them on the Harbercraft website. The fact is that most of these are pretty well setup vid's and the average guy wouldn't spend 40 to 50 grand on a boat and then run it like that unless it was for competition. Where it and the glasser shine is for the occasional "Oh currap" boating incidents that most of us fear. Being able to get safely back to port when one of those happens is what it's all about. I personally think it's very innovative use of the technologies available today. Not to make this political but in this economy, recreational boat sales are off and in the U.S., Homeland Security and Law Enforcment have RIB and Aluminum. This innovation might help to shift the tides and also influence recreational boaters to buy a better built boat. I would hope that it will also force the big names like Brunswick to rethink their technologies if they're going to stay competitive.

i am still wondering how they incorporate the carbon fibre and kevelar into the laminate with out using epoxy. they are using poly because the had gellcoat.

the use of the higher grade fabrics like carbon and kevelar, require the use of epoxy for any proper gains from the strong laminate.

there are several builders that are placing strips of carbon or kevelar in the hulls and calling it a re enforced hull......but the reality is that not enough material is used in the construction to be any benefit.

yeah you are more than likely right zop......most of the builders went to ve resins in the late 90's....

but even still ....you need epoxy to get the benefits of the stregnth of carbon or kevelar
