From an un-named repuable shop with top notch mechanics this happened. a trim cylinder had the hyd hoses accidently reversed attempted to raise the drive.Being late and being eaten by bugs the install was rushed . In the am another tech seeing the work completed attempted to raise the drive and you guessed ,heard a crack . The kind that you just know something bad has happened. Pictures were not allowed so this is what happened. The complete tail end on the upper unit cracked off cleanly. Now at the welders getting repaired.

The power of hydraulics

Surface area times pressure equals force. And those pumps can push 3,000psi. It takes very little surface area to create enough force to break castings.

The machines I work on at work (ROVs) use hydraulics. I have lost count of the number of numb-nuts I've yanked out of the 'line of fire' of the manipulator arms at the front when the hydraulics were running.
