alright i know there is someone out there dying to show me how mcuh they know. my uncle god rest him would have jumped all over this.... i have a johnson four cylinder engine, often called a fat 50. these were either 50 or 75 horse based on what i hve been told, i wanna know what year i have and what the hp is on it and the only numbers on it are on the engine freeze plug. Numbers are as follows J2485923.... SOMEBODY WOW ME PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I could answer the question, but the "know-it-all" term has been used disparagingly here lately.

I'll say this---"Fat 50" refers to the 1959-59 V4-50 hp motors. You don't have one.

The V-4's started in 58 as V4-10 or V4S10 at 50 hp, they went up in number a year at a time, 59 =V4-11. Went to 75 hp in 1960. Look on top of the transom clamp for a plate, or on the leg to recheck your numbers. They are good motors, but can be thirsty at WOT.

i used the term fat fifty as that is how most ppl know them,and the motor we started with was a 1958 fat 50. current motor was installed by my father and has been pieced together for example the transom mount is from a 1963 longshaft 75 horse. we have used the best of what we had and all the parts bolted up fine. current engine is what i'm unsure of, same basic layout and design ans the original fat 50 but the only numbers i can find that are reliable are the one's on the freeze plug on the motor they are as follows J2485923

WOW!! I just found out there was a motor called a fat fifty, that would suggest that it was fat and it was a fifty. Am i a know it all now too?

he says things like

kinda narrows it down huh.

I wanted to reply to that this thread yesterday, but didnt dare!!!!!!

how come no one said just go to a dealer and have him look up the serial number!!!!!

I am sure there are some dealers here.

Just because I'm such a nice guy I have a call in for him to a dealer, know it all's or not, none of us pretend to be, the noob's just don't understand the art of "approach" on this board sometimes.

That's a great link, but its a listing of model numbers, not serial numbers. It says serial number in the title portion of each section, but then goes to model number info.


PS: Just spoke to one of the guys at iboats in the IT dept. He looked at the page with me and is going to fix the serial number references, where the actual info is model number related.
