I created a new topic for our conversation on the showboat construction plans and Ideas. :) I didnt mind hijacking my other thread but this makes it easier to remember how to find what we were talking about :D I just changed the topic name to accomadate any boat. :)

More Showboat Plans and Pics here.
I would have done that but I already own a 4 hp gas motor and a 36 lb thrust trolling motor... Easier to use what I have :) Also exhaust on an outboard goes outside... Would have to vent the exhaust to the outside using a regular motor.

You could pipe the exhaust underwater...

Re: To Build a Boat (any boat)

think that would make it much quieter at the power head? as in enough to keep it inside? How would you insulate going through the hull or wall to keep it from melting/burning something?

Re: To Build a Boat (any boat)

Yea I'm rehijacking my own thread again... I'd like to hear some of your comments on the possiblities of building a small pontoon boat along the lines of a craig cat.

I am thinking with all the free plans out there for building Kayaks... that a craig cat style built from two homemade kayaks styled to meet demand would make a lightweight and possiblly quick hull for a small outboard.

I'm thinking a couple of 10' to 12' kayak hulls should hold the weight of one full grown adult + motor + fuel + Seat. The longer you make it the increased buoyancy and faster the hull. At least thats the case with a kayak.. The long ones are the fast ones... and if a single kayak can hold an adult and supplies... 2 should hold an adult and motor and fuel right? maybe cruise fast over smooth waters?

You have ADD man???

Actually I've thought of a pontoon type boat using canoes or kayaks as hulls. It would need to be very light as displacement is low using these hulls. Speed would need to be limited to sub-planing as canoes and kayaks are purely displacement hulls.

Remember the one sheet "dug" canoe? I think two of those with a trampoline between and a small outboard would make a very interesting raft for exploring and fishing.

Back to the Show boat... then on to the pontoon.

There are some fine auto insulations used to insulate the Doghouses on vans... I would be scared that if you got enough wind against you... with a smaller motor you would be at a standstill...you got to figure your sailing a brick wall against the wind at times. I was thinking like a small 4 cylinder outta a honda or toyota... light pretty good in power... and they can go through hell and back and still run. I think I would exhaust it out the stack.... put a muffler on it and out the top it would go... If I was feeling special... throw some sea foam in the tank and make her smoke a bit...lol

On the pontoons.... In all reality... with the kayacks.... you would basically be building a catamaran.

Not sure what you mean... but can never have enough projects if thats what your referring to.. I'm reverting back to the canoe in two will be reduced to a row craft for the nephews :)

I'm conflicted with ideas... The showboat will wait awhile for mine... I posted it as a future project and others were interested in seeing it. its going to be a good sized project and I have another big project in order soon... The pontoon/cat yep itwould be like a cat your right... still I think small enough to set to the side when I dont have time... light and smooth enough for a small outboard to get it up to speed. :) I love fun

Using Kayak hulls for fast running boats is a mistake, as well as canoues. Those are displacement hulls and designed for moving thru water with a limited resistance up to a given speed. Above that, they wount go, thats basic hull technology. Faster speeds require a hull that is built with the possibility of planing, moving on water surface. Even the Olympic sailboat hulls, which usually are displacement hulls are built with that option. A Kayak wont - no way.

As a side note - Briggs and Honda engines of that sort are air cooled and would need some open air ventilation to keep cool. If you insulate for sound you'll likely be keeping heat in, too. Might want to figure out a way to have a bilge blower type motor run vented air into and out of the enclosed engine area... Of course, then that would require a modest charging system run off the motor as well...
Neat looking project, though. Have fun with it!

- Scott

I see what you mean... I want to see the bottom of a craig cat now to see what their bottom shape is..

I just dont want the classic hydro look to get speed out of a small engine... want something differant, quick, and stable. :)

I also dont want to just go buy something... thats to easy and then i'll just want for something else... If it takes forever for me to build, i'll want to finish it instead of wanting for something else :D

Re: To Build a Boat (any boat)

IF you took a small V-bottom boat.... Measured it out and then shrunk those number to fit your project to me would should better results then just guessing.

Take a look at this:
http://home.clara.net/gmatkin/flyingmousepics.htm

Might be able to place a small outboard on the back of this... downloaded the plans and looks pretty easy to build.

I saw those the other day and it didnt cross my mind because I was in search of kayak plans :D I think I like that without a deck.

I'm sure the deck is there for some support.... Might be able to put a "lip" around it for strength

Re: To Build a Boat (any boat)

There are kayak plans on this page, plus heaps of other free plans. They are all old school in their construction, but could easily be made using more modern techniques.

http://www.svensons.com/boat/

Here are the plans for the canoe I built, then modified to put the 4hp mariner on.

http://www.bateau2.com/free/cheapcanoe.htm

I am temped to build another one of these, but change the specs a little bit. Probably keep the floor at 6mm thick, but reduce the side to 4mm. Or build the whole thing from 4mm and sheath it in F/G. It's a little heavy when made from 6mm completly. Then again, that was with 6mm pine plywood. Maybe Gaboon would be better, It's nearly three times the price however.

what kind of speed did you get out of it with the 4hp?

Lots of good info there... getting more ideas :)

Re: To Build a Boat (any boat)

Ok... Yes Calico I do have A.D.D. :D After doing a lot of reading at the sites Lark provided, I decided that I'm going to scrap the pontoon idea and go for a single hull again. Keep in mind any of these plans can change at any given moment with me :) I've decided on the minimax due to ease of construction, material list prices, speed, and hull displacement. :) These plans claim they can speed a 165 lb man up to 15 mph with a 3 hp. I'm not holding my breath but 10 mph would be fun with my 4 hp in this small of a craft. here is the front page with those claims and a picture of one someone built following. :)

p.s. I'm sure their projected prices have inflated by 700% :D

Re: To Build a Boat (any boat)

That looks like a fun and easy project boat. At 70 lbs I can see it moving pretty good. I personally like the complex stearing on it...lol

I got to looking at those plans and saw the one that you sit on... That looked neat and to me looked like an eye looker at the lake... a jet ski with an outboard... How much more redneckin can you get???
