Wimper how wide will that be? It looks like it could be a bit topheavy. are you going to make outriggers like you did for the canoe in two?

Re: To Build a Boat (any boat)

lol it'll be 40" tall, 48" wide by aprox 108" long (9')

The bottom is made of 1/2" ply and will have mini stringers as opposed to the top being 1/4" ply and the front hatch is removeable so topheavy no.

The rear hatch is for airflow and headroom during water operation. Debating now making the front hatch just raise like the rear so I dont have to leave it behind in case of rain on the water.

Calico I could use your suggestion of a kayak outrigger for a liferaft :D and stability.

I think a lifeboat is a great idea Wimper :D It could serve double duty as a tender.

Hey Wimper, did you ever get the transom on the minimax finished? Or is all your time dedicated to the camper-boat :D

Re: To Build a Boat (any boat)

The transom is fixed and on there but just need to cut it down by an inch or so which I can do with it installed.... The lake is down right now (hydroelectric dam) so I've set it off to the side for now while I build this camper boat in the mean time... too much work, too many projects and not enough time to go try it out again right now. I also need to fix the back cornors of it where I drug it over the rocks to get it back to the trailer as I always did a beach launch with it. One of these days I'll try it again.

Are you considering building one? The plans claim a 3 hp will push it to 14 mph with a 160 lb person in it. If you do though make your motor board verticle because of the angle of your weedless.

If they do suggest it I think they're referring to a newer, lighter 40hp than that beast. :D
Eric

No, the old 40 can be used, there is a website that details the exploits of someone who stripped down a 35hp BigTwin, and ran it on a minimax. I'll post the link when I get home.

That's crazy! What speed are you aiming for? Tracker did 40mph with a 9.9!
WE WANT VIDEOS OF THIS ONE :D :D
Eric

Re: To Build a Boat (any boat)

I didn't say I was doing it. I've put to much time into rebuilding my 40 bigtwin to go and throw it away like that! I found a website however that cover putting one on a minimax.

I don't think the hull for the minimax can do much more than about 45mph, I found another site where they were putting merc MK25 engines on. These things are 20hp, and were getting 43mph, the site that detailed the bigtwin minimax, it only got about 45mph.

I think Tracker's is in the sweet spot, 9.9hp 40mph, a 15 might get him to the 45 without gaining engine weight.

Re: To Build a Boat (any boat)

now a 40 on the camper boat... hmmmmmm lol j/k not an option.. I think a 15 on the minimax would be perfect. I've been wanting one for awhile now but i'd settle for a normal 9.9 or 9.8. Getting something accomplished on the camper boat this weekend come **** or high water. Pics will follow later.

I sure didnt realize how much of a challenge it would become to build a boat from imagination. I think its probably 10 times easier to reengineer someone elses plans. Trying to get dual function out of a hull is proving to be a feat unexpected. I know the kayak thats coming next will be modified from other plans as opposed to brainstorming. Its much easier to cut out parts and put them where they belong. Yes I have a new appreciation for ametuer boat builders who design their own.

I'd like to see how deep that sits in the water. Probably best to get a good estimate before you trim the transom to its final height.
