To buy or not to buy a Briggs and Stratton 5hp

I am in the market for a small outboard and need it to (1) idle smooth and (2) Very Quiet for about 8 hrs at a time. I fish in very swift water and can't use an electric motor.
Have been using a 1969 Johnson 9.9 for years and does a great job but it is old and I have the new motor wants. I was told that Yamaha was my best option so I bought a new 2004 8hp 2 cycle. Not happy at all. The Yamaha is ok but is not as quiet or nearly as smooth running at idle as my old Johnson. Is a 4 cycle the way to go for quiet and smooth idle? The Briggs is air cooled and may not handle the long hours of idle with over heating, I don’t know any one that has one. OK, I know the first response is why not buy a Johnson 4 cycle. I really don’t know why, so any info or response would be appreciated.

You want a quiet, smooth motor. STAY AWAY FROM THE B&S! It has an almost violent vibration, and it can be heard for miles. I'm not kidding. It has above water exhaust and sounds just like a lawn mower. I have never had a problem with overheating and I run mine at near idle speed for extended periods. A Johnson 4 stroke would be a good choice. I like the Honda motors though, whisper quiet at idle and very smooth.

Oh yeah did I mention don't buy the Briggs? You would be dissapointed.

For long periods of idling and trolling, i believe that a four stroke would meet those needs quite adequately, good luck and welcome to iboats :)

Yeah....four stroker for trolling at long periods of time. But....the 9.9/15 two strokes can do that to....ehhhhh maybe not as quiet as a 4 stroke but the old ones...say 80 to 94 can do a good job also....find a used one cheap maybe the way to go??? By the by....69' is a 9.5hp.... :)

Way to noisy.
Not recommended for trolling use, and I have the emails from B&S tech department to prove it. I think I posted them here last year, if you care to search for them.

You don't state whether this would be the main power source, or a kicker motor, either way, it is not the engine for you. Also, motor is only available in a short shaft.

I won't tell you to do it, or not do it. Just be aware of what it is. It is a lawnmower engine sitting on top of a Mercury mid section and lower unit.

Roscoe is right about the trolling part. It is, or at least was, not recommended.

I have one of the 5hp B&S and I love it...but it is NOISY and it vibrates. A great little motor to get you where you're going cheap, but not if you're trying to sneak up on someone:)

I agree with everyone else stay away from the B&S. Way too loud and the vibrations will leave you dizzy.

Since you like the Johnson so much why not look at another one??? They have a 4,6&8hp 4-Stroke that would meet your needs quite nicely.

I bought one of these and put it on a 15' Gheenoe expecting good speed, WRONG. The motor labors on the canoe type hull, might work ok on a jon boat. The motor is also loud and vibrates terribly like others have said. Will numb your hand in short order. Every time I take the boat out with the BS I want to just undo the clamps and throw it in the lake. Even the gas tank sucks, the cap is on the end away from the handle.

My suggestion - stay with the old Johnson.

The aircooled 4stroke is a great concept, just needs proper execution. Ideal would be a 90 degree v-twin which gives perfect primary balance with just a little rocking couple. The cyls would be separated which would make fan cooling practical. The thing would sound great, can you say mini Ducati.

The Gheenoe does great with a cheap Endura 30 trolling motor. Glides along effortlessly.

Re: To buy or not to buy a Briggs and Stratton 5hp

HERE"S THE BEEF!

Okay... I finally got my Briggs. I had a very hard time finding any performance information so I feel obligated to post it.

I have a 12.5 foot homemade jon boat, flat bottom, square stem, with a waterline width of just under 4 feet max.

Boat 130lbs.
Motor and gas 80lbs.
Me 200lbs.
anchor 5lbs.
misc 5lbs.

total approx 420 lbs.

Using motor at 4500ft altitude with 85 octane, I figure 4.5hp actual output.

Using GPS data on slow moving river...

9.7mph up stream, 10.7 downstream. Boat did not plane very well... nose in the air. I was sitting as far forward as I could on the floor and still reach the tiller.

With another 30lbs of tire chains in the front of the boat (all I had with me), I could get 11.5mph on the downstream side. Nose still in air.

Will do 8mph or so at 1/3-1/2 throttle. Very nice at this speed.

I'll agree that idle speed is kind of fast at 3.2mph. That is with the motor just put-putting along.

I am confident I can get at least 14mph out of it when I finish my tiller extension, can sit in the middle seat, can space the motor up another inch or so, and use higher octane fuel.

Boat was almost fast enough to plane, but weight was all wrong... I will post more after my next test.

Motor will hold itself in the up position(no lock in up position) for rowing through the shallow areas.

As far as noise... I really didn't think it was a problem, but I work around machinery often and haven't really experienced other outboards. I thought it was reasonably quiet, but did not have to converse.

Vibration... Resonates at certain RPM's, but can idle smooth, half throttle smooth, and fast is smooth (no worse than my motorbike).

overall am very happy with purchase. I will be lucky to get out on the water ten times a year so cheap and easy care was a big plus.

WARNING... When changing the trim or tilting the motor for any reason... turn off the fuel valve or turn motor as if turning boat left (carb on bottom)... otherwise motor will flood... hard to start.

For the money... so far... I can't complain. And after taking it out in freezing temps I didn't have to winterize it. Hit ground three times (hey... I'm new at this), once at full throttle. No noted damage except paint chipped off prop and skeg.

I'd certainly recommend it for the part-timer... and if you've been working on B&S engines all your life, you'll have it made. I think I have enough parts already in the garage to rebuild the thing in 10 years or so. Just remember, it is what it is... a cheap outboard with a good motor. I belive it will stand up to it's motto... "Priced to get you out there, built to get you back." Don't expect a Mercedes, maybe a Chevy Cavalier. Will get the job done, but won't make you gloat.

Oh... my gas tank handle was on the same side as the cap(?). Fuel line too short to reach front of boat (easy fix).

Hope it helps.

-Tim

Also... The motor doesn't have a big flywheel, probably to save weight, so it likes to turn counter clockwise at idle. For trolling I would imagine that this would be cumbersome without a way to hold it straight. There is a set screw on the side that may correct this, but I wouldn't count on it.

Before buying a B & S new, I'd consider a 4 stroke used...especially a Honda. I love Honda engines! I have a 2002 Civic and a 1992 300 4x4 ATV. Both excellent machines! :D

just because it says Honda on it does not mean Honda built it , there small 125 cc motorcycles are made in Brazil for example , but yes they make many good products
