I was a charter operator out of Coos bay or for 20 years On one occasion in heavy fog and I mean 20 yards or so vis we were trolling for salmon and hit a clear spot of about a city block, in it was a 16 footer he came over and asked me which way to the jetty, I gave him a compas heading and told him to stay in 20 fathoms and he would hit the North Jetty right on the money. when he told me he had no compass or fathometer and no radio I advised him to stick like glue to my stern while I finished out my trip then he could ride in in my wake. He waited about twenty min and then said he was going on in as he was low on fuel. Told him to wait as I was almost limited and would escort him but if he had to go follow the crab bouys in as they were in 18 fathoms and would guide him, as he left I notified the coast Guard that there was trouble on the way. Sure enough we had to set up a search I found him tied to a crab bouy, and stood by till the coast guard came up and took him in tow, they shook his boat down for violations and it cost him over $700.00 in fines. Look at the positive side, If there wasn't idiots like him, Our Coast Guard would have fewer funds/personnel. So we need idiots that don't know the facts/laws to keep the CG well manned and funded. It is sad but true......SS

I talked to some guys at a Marina in Chautauqua Lake NY that swore that they had a woman pull into the marina in a boat with the trailer still attached. I told them BullS*** and they showed me a picture of the boat hanging from a lift with the weed covered trailer underneath.. Still not sure I believe it.. but it was a great laugh!<br />They said she claimed it was her father's boat (who had past away) and said she never remembered him actually taking the boat off the railer. She was at the marina because she remembered the boat being able to go much faster when she was a kid.. <br />GAWD I hope they were just jerking my chain, I go to that lake alot! hehehehe

I was out in the thick fog, found the QA bouy (5 miles from anywhere), fished it for a while, then i am heading back listening to the foghorn and using compass. Out of the fog flys a little runabout, after swerving and barely missing me they pull up aloneside. Two nervouse looking guys ask me what foghorn that is up ahead. They didn't even have a compass. I tell them, then to my utter amazment and without listening to my warning shout the turn sharply and head out to sea. I think that they thought they were on the other side of the lighthouse and would get to shore then follow the shore. I never saw them again, but i wonder about them often...<br />"Hey! where do you think your going?"
