From time to time I read posts where someone feels accused og gets a bit insulted when the speech comes to value of, or possibility of selling our own things, and the moderators jump in.
I´m a bit sad to read these. I think none of us would dream about the cost of running this board, which gives good advise and pleasure to so many that has an interest in motors and boats. Remember Iboats is a business, they own and run the board and pay the cost. They have to get every possible sale connected to the expenced with this board, which I enjoy almost every day.
How would they else try to cover their expences ?
Sorry for my english !

Re: To everybody on this board

I know I'm gonna here it for this, but here goes,

I see nothing wrong with getting someone else's experienced opinion on what their motor or boat might be worth. I see it as no different than someone asking if they should fix their motor or get another one. That could also be construed as that person trying to sell the old one. After all, it is a boating forum, where questions and answers are the medium. I could understand if someone came on the forum and asked outright if anyone would like to buy their motor or boat. But asking for advice is what it's all about. Some people have no idea what their equipment is worth and it seems to me like this is the best place to turn for honest answers. At least I would like to think so. There are alot of sharp folks here who know their stuff and are more than happy to share the wisdom they have accumulated over the years. I'd hate to see too many restrictions placed on that! Just my opinion.

Re: To everybody on this board

I just checked all the "legal" stuff I can find on this forum and website, and no where does it say you can't offer you stuff for sale on the forums.

Maybe it does somewhere, but I did not find it.

I am not advocating useing this forum for that purpose.

Regarding the expense of running these boards, I do believe that iboats.com makes a lot of money off of people who come here to view these boards, then stay to look up the parts/supplies they need. They would not be operating these boards if it was not a money maker.

I do enjoy and have learned from people/information on these boards and from services like looking up propeller part numbers to find other manufactures equivalent prop.

And that is my $0.02

Mark

Re: To everybody on this board

Hi, Guys.

We agree in principle, Rick and Bubbakat. However:

In the past, posts detailing condition, etc, and asking for opinions on value have generated offers and perhaps cost iboats business.

We all know that true market value of an outboard varies greatly with location and season.

As specified in http://www.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=17;t=009035 offers to sell are not allowed, nor are solicitations to buy.

I interpret detailed features and notification that an engine is for sale as an offer to sell, even if that is not the poster's intention .

If I can deflect that to refer the poster to reliable sources of market activity, I will.

Suppose a member is in the market for a 70hp outboard, is considering an iboats offer, and sees another member's post asking what he should price a 70hp engine for, and that member is fairly close by. iboats has financed it's own competition.

Thanks for your input, and for the opportunity to explain. :)

Re: To everybody on this board

JB

I see your point too and agree with the policy of "No competition" on this board for iboats products. If I were buying a Motor and considering one from iboats, it wouldn't matter to me what someone else said another members motor is worth, because I don't know that member or what that motors condition may be. At least from iboats, I know that I would get a fair deal & a real good chance that the product would be in good condition and that I am dealing with honest people who would stand behind their product. I respect your opinions highly JB, but I think most people on here are just looking for good advice and not trying to gain anything by circumventing or manipulating iboats own sales. I know you have to weed out the "Bad Ones", but a little more discression may be needed on certain posts. On the post we are referring to, I did give him what NADA recommended. Had he know about NADA, I'm sure he would have done it himself. And that's where the purpose of the forum comes in. Directing people who don't know, to the proper place for info, whether that's personal advice or from another site that does know. Anyway, you can close this one out, as we all got the jest of the subject. Keep up the good work and there is no better board that I have found for good, honest advice! :)

Re: To everybody on this board

I suspect my post about the 8 hp Johnson may have started this, and I just want to say that I undestand the staff's position, and feel they were fair in warning me not to try to sell it here, even if I was just asking advice. I am new here, and fully intend to comply with the rules. I have seen boards overrun with ads and spam, and I wouldn't tolerate it either!

JB Thanks for your honest and valued answer I can see where the confliction would come in.
some would use this as a way to market items that iboats sell so with that said thanks for the good work
