For what it's worth, I left my car parked for about 36 hours at a busy camp ground/boat ramp with the passenger side window wide open. Nothing missing - the portable DVD player ($$), full tool box, and a cheap CD player where right out in the open, along with assorted other trinkets that were in the unlocked glove box and center console.

Pure luck on my part, but like russeller said, neither honest people nor crooks care if it's wide open or locked. The honest people leave it alone no matter what, the crooks just do what it takes to steal it. I guess it's always a better idea to make it harder for the crooks though.

It's not the same in all parts of the country...
Here in western Kansas, we leave stuff unlocked all the time, and rarely do we see any problems...
The guy next to ya is likely to put a slug in someones rear if they know that person doesn't belong..
It's sad to see things like that happen though.

My father was the county sheriff here for 25 years. On this subject he always said "a lock keeps an honest person honest".

I agree that a lock keeps an honest person honest, but the unlocked situation may make an otherwise honest person dishonest. Lock may help in some cases.

Sometimes you get an honest deed done to you, and it lifts your whole day.

But temptation breeds thieves.

Lock the car up, but make it look empty. Hide everything inside it. Even leave the empty glove box open so that the inside can be seen.

No temptation - fewer opportunists.

Sorry to hear that russeller. I don't even leave my truck or trailer unlocked at my house. Putting all of my stuff out of sight, including the radio, and a good alarm to kill the ignition and make alot of noise along with full glass coverage, gives me some peace of mind, and a nice big lock on my trailer and hitch receiver keep the trailer safe. I've seen guys leave trailers unlocked in the yard and come back to no trailer. Just one of the reasons insurance rates are what they are down here. I didn't even think people locked their houses up your way.
