Funny, when I first saw this forum title (To flush or not to flush) I was reminded of when I visited my daughter in Alaska and the only water to be had was brought in by tanker at $50 bucks a pop which explained the sign over the toilet that said "if it's yellow, let it mellow - if it's brown, flush it down". This might not be original but it was pretty clear.

After a trip to the coast, I hit the St. Johns River (Fresh) for a short run. I then wash the boat, trailer and fishing gear when I get home. However, my brother in law have a 'tooner on a salt water canal in Sarasota that stays there year round. I don't know the exact year of the motor but know it is 15 years or more. It is seldom out of the water and never flushed. However, it is used almost daily. Maybe running in salt and letting the engine sit idle for an extended period and continuing this cycle is the worst yet.?

My theory is that as long as it is wet in there (water pump, etc.) there is no problem. When it drains, the residual salt concentrates, forms crystals and fouls everything up.
