Re: To fog or not to fog (Colonoscopy for your engine)

Why do MARINE engines always have to be compared against Automotive and Aircraft? They are neither.
Wouldn't it be better to compare your marine engines and/or procedures to other marine engines and keep with apples to apples and not apples to oranges.

Because there is always some self important part time pilot, mechanic or enthusiast that always seems to thinks their knowledge of an airplane engine has some relevance to boating and marine engines.

Why do people think marine engines are something special? They use the same materials and work the same way as automotive or aircraft engines. They're automotive engines with bronze casting plugs and water cooled exhaust. The engine has no idea what's attached to the flywheel. If you're not capable of analyzing and comparing operating conditions and parameters, it's kind of like having square wheels on your car. As long as you're convinced that they're the best thing out there, no point wasting your time learning about round wheels.

You can count the number of marine engine manufacturers on one finger. There's very little incentive to develop marine technology with no competition. Because the cost of a replacement engine is so cheap and there are so little consequences because of a poorly maintained engine, there's no incentive to develop or promote extensive maintenance or preservation.

A marine engine is way behind in the technology curve compared to automotive engines due to the limited marine market as compared to the automotive market. They're way behind the aircraft engines in the maintenance department due to the fact that it's pretty irrelevent if your marine engine craps out, while it's a matter of life and death if your aircraft engine quits.

Dude, just give it a rest. You're spinning your square wheels.

See, you're slooooooowlyyyyyyyy getting there, learning little by little with the simple examples (the square wheels was the simplest thing I could think of). Don't be discouraged, one day you may understand it! ;)
