To Gel, or not to Gel...

I've been going over my new (to me) old boat putting together my Spring fix-it list. It appears that the PO has done enough beaching that he's rubbed off the gel-coat on the keel, just behind the bow. It looks to be just through the gel coat and getting near, but not into, the outer mat.

Most of our boating locations here are kind of primitive, so I suspect I'll want to beach from time to time. I'm planning to add a keel shield to keep the damage to a minimum. I was wondering whether you all would recommend putting some gel-coat or paint over the bare spot prior to installing the keel shield, or just applying it over the bare area.

It's not a large area, maybe 1/2 inch wide max over about three feet.

Opinions?

Thanks,

Carl

I am no expert but I would think you need more than paint.
Some pics of the damage would help to see how bad the damage is and what would be needed to repair it.

Some of the experts should jump in when you post some pics.

Personally I would just keel guard it.
