Ordinarily I'd say it is too good to be true but someone on this board just stole a nice Donzi for around that price

I smell a scam. I suspect your answer will be that he has to sell the boat because of some family emergency and he (or his brother) is connected with some company or agency that lets him ship it for free. You send payment through some phony eBay or Paypal site and he will then ship the boat.

Actually, what happens is that you send the money and he disappears.

I hope I'm wrong, but I've seen these ads before.

Suspicious is kind of a weak word, disbelief was more like it.

Come on, who wouldn't want that boat for 4200? :D

Ok back to reality.

Now I won't get my boat?:(

I really would like to know, how many people in a million fall for this stuff.

I think it's a scam.

We've been having 2009 Nitro boats coming in our area craigslist for $4200

Re: to good to be true?

I got an email from the "owner" of the boat

pretty typical for the Craigslist scam....

Hi,

Thank you for being interested in buying my 2001 Wellcraft Martinique 2400 Cabin Cruiser Boat with only 470 hours.
It is in EXCELLENT condition; the body and paint are great, no scratches and no dents; it has never been involved in an accident; comes with all the documents needed.
My final price on it is US $4,200. It is priced to sell fast !
My husband died one month ago and I decided to move closer to my parents(they are very old) in Canada and the boat is here with me. As I am unable to travel in the near future and having no one to help me with the sale I decided to make this transaction through eBay. I believe this protects both buyer and seller and it's the right way to do this.
So don't get me wrong and don't take it personally but I would prefer to secure the deal through eBay. Also because the boat will be shipped from Canada to US I prefer to work with a third party in order to keep the both of us safe in this deal. I will be assured you will buy the boat and you will be assured that you will receive it! Basically the money will be sent to eBay and they will keep them until you receive the boat and only after you inspect and test it they will forward the money to me.

If you have other questions feel free to email.
Thank you!

Re: to good to be true?

Just emailed the ad also, I'll play around with scammer for awhile, see if I can have some fun at least!

There is a really simple rule for CL boats. if you can't see the registration, or its an out of state registration, it has about a 99% chance it is a scam. In this case, take a close look at the ebay ad vs the CL one. He actually photoshop blurred over the registration enough to block it out, in the ebay one you can see it is Ohio.

On the link provided by the OP, there are reg numbers, but I can't read them. On second look, they appear to be photoshopped in though . . .

That was my plan as well. Maybe we all should, that might be entertaining.

The actual reg # is OH 0337 CY, the hull ID # is WELAJB24C101 :D

Personally I think we should all scan Craigslist for scams everyday and flood the SOBs with bogus replies. I have noticed this "paint" and "dents" comment more recently which indicates the scam is a C and P from auto scams . . .

Just updated my post with two images, the ebay and the Cl one stacked... the photoshop blurring is pretty obvious.

Re: to good to be true?

I emailed the scammer and let them know I was interested and wanted to know how to move forward with the purchase. Also I would like to know the Engine make and model.

I got this as a response:

Hello again,
If we reach an agreement, I am willing to take care of the shipping to your address as the boat is already at the shipping company in Quebec ready to go anywhere in the United States. Also the boat is free of any lien/loan.
The sale will be managed by eBay Vehicle Purchase Protection Program for our own protection as they act as a neutral third part. The lenght is 25,5 feet.
eBay Vehicle Purchase Protection Program will keep the money until you inspect/drive the boat.

This is how the Vehicle Purchase Protection Program works:

1. I will contact eBay Vehicle Purchase Protection Program and give all the info about this deal.
2. They will email us the forms which are needed for our deal.
3. You will send the payment to eBay and they will notify me to ship the boat to your location.
4. After you will inspect/drive the boat and decide to keep it, eBay will forward me the funds and the deal is done.

Remember you have 3 days to test it. If by any reason the boat is not as described or if you find any problems with it I will pay for the returning fees. I'm sure it won't be the case because it's a state of art looking and working boat. I apologize if it seems like I'm pushing on this deal but I really want to be sure everything is clarified before any further steps.
If you are interested please let me know your shipping details(full name and address) so I can open a transaction case.

Looking forward to hear from you!

Have they gotten so sophisticated that these scams are now automated?

I am going to ask: Does this boat have the OMC 8.1 litre? I like the boat but that would be the clincher for me.

Harass away, but there is literally no chance this is legit, so no need for a clincher . . . ;)

Re: to good to be true?

On no?I don?t think I was being clear, I know it?s a fake.

I just wanted to see if I could get the person running the scam to say: there was an OMC engine in a 2001 Wellcraft.

I just think that would be funny.

Next I will ask if it has an ?QC? propeller on it or maybe ?Smoking Crater? trim tabs. :D
