to grease a hub

ok pulled my hubs today to inspect/repack/replace and found the bearings good. trailer has bearing buddies. pulled the hubs and replaced the bearings/races and seals since i had already bought them. the hubs were full of old but good grease. cleaned the hubs out replaced races and packed new bearings. installed new seals. my questrion is should i fill the hubs back up with grease like was previous? or is packin the bearings alone sufficient? i prefer not to use the bb anymore read a lot of negative info on the bb.

The hub does not need to be full of grease. Pack the bearings and go.

Auto wheel bearings were, in my experience, packed, then the hub cavity filled about half full with grease. Now I read about bearing buddies that fill the cavity completely. I always thought the grease had to have room for expansion. I still fill partially fill the cavity before reassembly.

Try to fill a hub with grease using bearing buddies and the only thing you accomplish is to blow out the seal. If you have genuine bearing buddies, pack the bearings by hand. Assemble the bearings into the hub and install and adjust the free play. Then pump grease in until the center disk just begins to move. Then STOP.

The Bearing Buddy instructions says to fill the hub completely with grease if you still plan on using them. You fill the hub before you pound on the Bearing Buddy.

I use them. They work fine if you don't overfill.

On the Bearing Buddies you have no choice b/c the spring pressure will force grease into the hub cavity anyway. However the spring loaded piston will allow for thermal expansion of the grease. I strongly believe in BBs but they are to be used as a compromise for the prevention of water intrusion...I would never use them on a non-boat trailer.
