Re: to heat or not to heat????

Did you have O rings on the allen head bolt you pulled out of your bearing housing....

If so, I dont see why not, I have my 4 o-rings and I dont see or feel any dirrerence in them...

Just make sure you get all of the carbon build up out of the cavity prior to re-installation of the bearing housing..

Let me know what you use to remove it cause I have to re-install mine this weekend....

Not at all dd -- but boy was that a trip down memory lane! Oh man!

Then there was the guy who stuck his carrier back in upside down. "Just changed the seals and now it wont start! Piece of junk!" Hummm....loosen the bolts and spin it 1/2 turn so the exhaust is actually open. Fired right up.

Cap'n, I dont know about standard O rings. Id bet itll work if they are the right size and material. Dont forget, it gets pretty hot in there.

Re: to heat or not to heat????

Hey guys, I have a question. The plate that those 4 bolts screw into has one additional hole right between two of the bolt holes. I heard that that hole must be on the bottom before reassembly. true or false??

Re: to heat or not to heat????

I'm not sure why that hole is there other than to confuse us. It has nothing to do with alignment. We've always done that by putting 2 threaded rods or long bolts (with no heads) in the ring and slide the bearing carrier back in. Then start 2 of the bolts, remove the studs / rods and install the other 2 bolts.

Re: to heat or not to heat????

hi guys im back....pulled the carrier out last night found my leaking culprit....a dryed destroyed oring grrrrrrr and also....the grove where the oring sits in has pieces missing!!!!!something cause it to break.no pieces inside so i think someone changed something inside at one time and jest put it back together half assed.looking right now for a new one or a used one any suggestions?also it was very clean inside the lu no rust or dirt or anything out of the norm so hopefully i can get this piece ....also found the 4 orings they are recessed in the head of the bolts and one of them was almost riped in two.ill keep ya posted and thanks for all the help......
***1971 18'winner 1969 115 jonny***
***THURSDAY***

Re: to heat or not to heat????

Cap'n, where are the pieces missing from the O ring groove? If they're missing toward the inside we may still be OK. If the side toward the prop has pieces missing you may want to consider replacing it. I've seen some with a small piece missing on the gear side and it didnt leak.

Obviously to do it correctly and take no chances we'd want the groove in tact.

Re: to heat or not to heat????

DHadley, what is the best way to clean out the carbon build up in the prop housing cavity prior to re-installation.

Obviously you would want to remove as much as possible, and should the large O ring be coated in a grease prior to installing?????

Re: to heat or not to heat????

good question dd,inside my housing believe it or not there is no build up what so ever i was actually suprised, and happy.i would think a little marine grease wouldnt hurt anything.maybe spray a little deepcreep in there or on a rag and give it a good cleaning that way.

Re: to heat or not to heat????

The cleaning of that area is critical. I stuff rags in there so as to keep as much junk out as possible. If crud gets in that pump it wont shift right.

Yes, a little grease is very helpful when sliding the carrier back in. The hardest part is getting the screws lined up with the retainer ring. Check my post a couple back about how we line them up. pretty simple really.

Obviuosly gasket sealer on the 4 small O rings too.
